@Cher Of course, on a #ringworld, you might NOT want to hop out of the atmosphere to go directly to a distant location because doing so would inherently trigger the anti-meteor defenses to prevent impact on the interior surface.

Forgot to mention that on my casual quest to read a bunch of "best sci-fi novels of all time" (well, at least from the mid-20th century onwards), I recently finished #Ringworld. It was just OK. There was a LOT of what felt like filler in the book - the writing equivalent of extended special effects sequences for example - wrapped around a few interesting thoughts. Like the Space Odyssey series, this was probably inspirational in its time, but is now thoroughly-tread ground in the genre.

Well, I'm a bit with you on the "any sufficiently advanced tech is indistinguishable from magic" thing. When too much of that is in the forefront, it can diminish my enjoyment. That being said, I've been watching "Orphan Black" with my wife and it's pretty enjoyable.
