When noting some #artists weren’t great people, I am not being reductionist or saying one can’t enjoy their #art. Pointing out parts of #RoaldDahl’s work were problematic—the original Oompa Loompas in #WillyWonka were Africans he “saved,” #colonialism and #racism abound—and his virulent #antisemitism—he talked about #Jewish bankers and #media, that Hitler chose #Jews for a reason—is showing the full person. The good and the bad can be discussed while still loving someone’s work.

I don't understand why the recent edits to Agatha Christie's work have faced so little outrage, compared to the debacle with Roald Dahl's books. Both are a money grab at best, and part of a shameful and futile attempt to censor the problematic aspects of our history.

In 2020, #RobertZemeckis and #GuillermoDelToro both collaborated on an adaptation of a #RoaldDahl book, The Witches. Two years later, they would BOTH go on to release remakes of #Pinnocchio

That’s wild right? Remakes have gotten to a point where we’re getting the same movie remade TWICE in one year. Zemeckis and Del Torro are both massively talented ppl so I don’t wanna dismiss these movies outhand as trash, I just think it’s something worth noting. @filmstudies

A decent essay about the Roald Dahl posthumous-editing-for-inclusive-language flap that dispenses with preening and any pretenses about authorship or the notion that editing well-known texts is some new outrage. The point is why and by whom, the writer argues. This would be a good place to start the conversation.

The argument to be made for preserving Roald Dahl's works should be that censorship is bad. When people say more, and they often do, it shows that they don't care about free speech or even Dahl's speech in particular. It's about preserving the right for negative speech.
