Robbie Robertson's final album was "Sinematic", released in 2019. Howie B returns, and so does Pino Palladino (his fretless bass is a different animal, but still reminds me a bit of Rick Danko here and there - also he can be as funky if he wants to). Jim Keltner, Chris Dave, Glen Hansard, and Derek Trucks have their turns. The result is an atmospheric, often indeed cinematic mixture of trippy Howie B beats and rootsy rock. Ain't "The Shadow" a grand trip?

Another long wait before the next album, the somewhat uneven "How to Become a Clairvoyant" from 2011. After exploring techno beats, we're mostly back to rootsy sounds with an excellent band including Eric Clapton and Pino Palladino. There are several touching autobiographical songs, but also some rather lacklustre ones ("Axman"). The opener "Straight Down the Line" and the title track are probably my favorites. An artsy "Tango for Django" caps things off.

Jaime Royal Robertson was born 1943 in Toronto, were his father was from. Robertson's mother was of Mohawk descent, born and raised on the Six Nations Reservation. He learned to play guitar from relatives during summer visits to the reservation. I don't own his album no. 4, "Contact from the Underworld of Redboy" (Capitol/EMI, 1998). One of the tracks, "Sacrifice", features spoken words by incarcerated activist Leonard Peltier:

Robertson's third album was my very first encounter with his music. I didn't understand much of or about it as a kid ... but it has grown on me a lot. "Robbie Robertson' & The Red Road Ensemble - Music for The Native Americans" often seems like a movie, traveling places, changing camera angles and narrative perspectives. Featuring Pura Fé, Douglas Spotted Eagle, Rita Coolidge and others."It's a Good Day to Die" is another masterpiece.

"Storyville" was Robbie Robertson's second album, released in 1991 - and much more to my liking. In ten songs, Robertson travels through the eponymous section of New Orleans, the music now sounding warm (and breathing!) indeed. Garth Hudson, Ronnie Foster, the Rebirth Brass Band and several of the Meters are among the guest musicians. "Soap Box Preacher" is one of Robertson miniature epic song-tales.

"Robbie Robertson" was released in 1987 - a "moody and atmospheric" production by Daniel Lanois, which to my ears never really gets going. I'm afraid those Lanois productions sound pretty cold to me (his work for U2 a lot more so than this). Yet some of the songs are outstanding and ample proof Robertson hadn't lost his epic songwriting talent a bit. "Fallen Angel," "American Roulette," and "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" are new yet sound familiar.

Revisiting the late lamented Robbie Robertson's leader albums. I'm afraid none of them will ever be as dear to me as the albums by The Band ...

I am not going to pretend to be a bigger fan than I am. I like a few songs by #TheBand. But ...
#TheWeight is, IMHO (H stands for humble), one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

Very sad to hear of the passing of
Robbie Robertson

He made terrific music and classic songs with The Band. His self titled solo album is also great.
