A few synth fiends here might be interested in this. It’s a snapshot of Roland’s take on synthesisers from 1976, the manual for the System 100 101 keyboard and semi-modular synth.

It goes into quite a bit of detail on the physics of sound but it’s almost entirely aimed at helping keyboard players to emulate ”real” instruments. There’s a patch book too, filled with examples trying to copy traditional instruments. Those and the odd “special effect.”

Electronic music wasn’t on their radar as far as selling synthesisers in the mid 70s was concerned. Or at least not the target market for the System 100.

They were very much an East Coast take on synthesis too, subtractive synths and very similar to Moog in many ways but more affordable. Built around the keyboard as the primary source of pitch and gate.

I bought mine off a mate in the late 70s, thank you student grant 🖤😄
If only I'd been able to get hold of the 102 expander too, so expensive now. As a basic monophonic synth it sounds incredible though and as a semi-modular it's very easy to expand. A set of Digisound modules was added to mine in the early 80s.
