This runestone is called Sö 148 and stands next to a field by a small stream in Runtuna south of Stockholm. This stone mentions a man who died in the east, in Gardar, which is modern day Russia. It’s been attributed to the rune carver Traen.

The inscription reads:
“Þjóðulfr (and) BĂși, they raised this stone in memory of Farulfr, their father. He met his end in the east in GarĂ°ar.”

This is the runestone Sö 171 in SĂ€ttersta south of Stockholm. It’s runes carved into a rock near the top of a hill. Unfortunately large parts of the carvings has fallen off. It mentions a man who died in Holmgard, modern day Novgorod in Russia.

The inscription reads:
“Ingifastr had the stone cut in memory of Sigviðr, his father. He fell in Holmgarðr, the ship's leader with the seamen.”

Today’s excursion ended at Jarlabanke’s bridge in TĂ€by north of Stockholm. Here we find two runestones erected by Jarlabanke after himself, and a road lined with erected stones. Two other runestones have been moved to the churches in Danderyd and Fresta.

Jarlabanke’s family, starting with his grandmother, has erected 19 runestones that we know of today. Jarlabanke has erected as many as six stones after himself, more than anyone else. The bridge was built in the 1050’s.

Here’s another runestone I visited in Sigtuna today. It’s U 393, and it’s erected by Ofeg in memory of his sisters. It is made of granite and has carvings on two sides, but the band on one side does not have any runes. It stands on the rune path near U 392. KĂ€llström has attributed the stone to the carver VisĂ€te. The ornamentation is in the styles Pr 2 and Pr 3.

It reads: “Ófeigr had this stone raised in memory of his two sisters TĂłra(?) and HróðvĂ©.”

It dates from c.1100 and commemorates Vikings who died in the Byzantine Empire. The inscription reads:

"Thorsteinn had the landmark made in memory of Sveinn, his father, and in memory of Thórir, his brother. They were abroad in Greece. And in memory of Ingithóra, his mother. ƒpir carved."

It came from a church in Eds, near Stockholm, and was donated by Charles XI of in 1687.

World’s oldest dated runestone found in Norway

Archaeologists have discovered the “world’s oldest runestone,” a squat block of sandstone with etchings scribbled across its flat surface.

The ancient stone discovered by researchers in Norway may contain the earliest example of “words recorded in writing in Scandinavia.”

What is possibly the oldest has been discovered in a gravefield in eastern Norway.
Cremated remains found in association with the stone date it to between 1 and 250AD. Could the inscription be a woman's name "Idibera" or the kin name "Idiberung"? This find is good evidence that Germanic tribes adopted writing for some purposes very early in the Roman period.

Going to mix it up a little for my contribution to with this interesting piece. Back during my undergrad, I had the opportunity to dig at a field school in , Sweden. This captured my attention then and it's probably one of my favorite "mysteries." It's called the "Snake-witch Stone" and has been dated from 400-600AD (end of Scandinavian ). /1
