The Nowhere Men & Women: How India Abandoned 14 Crore Citizens on a Policy Paper
The government of India runs the world’s biggest food security scheme, which provides free ration to more than 80 crore people. The scheme has won Prime Minister Narendra Modi accolades. But what if we realise that there are over 14 crore people who have been omitted from the benefit of this scheme because the government has not counted Indian citizens in over a decade? Can its intransigence break the welfare structure of governance?

Amidst A Govt-Enforced Data Vacuum, Stagnating Wages & Rising Costs Increase Economic Distress In Rural India
For nearly a decade, the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi—who said farm incomes would double by 2022—has withheld or criticised available data on poverty. Data that his government rejected, but Maharashtra released, indicate the share of food in monthly expenses in rural households in the state rose between 2011-12 and 2017-18, an indicator of growing economic vulnerability, even as inflation-adjusted wages in rural India contracted over 16 consecutive months to March 2023. From the interiors of India’s richest state, we report how daily wages are stagnant, as inflation and rising costs push more Indians into poverty.
