There’s a definite place for social commentators like Russell Brand in our current paradigm. We need people prepared to ask difficult questions & who’re open to answers coming from across the entire political spectrum.
But I’m a bit flummoxed by this excerpt from his talk with Jordan Peterson on Identity Politics.
It appears that these two straight, cis men, are ignoring the fact that people are often forced to explain & defend themselves in the arena of Identity Politics by the wider straight cis community whose judgements & (wrongly) assumed superiority springs partially from religious doctrine.
Nobody thinks the most interesting thing about themselves is who they have sex with, or how, or why, or where they sit on the gender spectrum, or if they’re trans. I’d say everyone would just prefer to be treated respectfully, equally, & left to get on with their lives without incessant interrogation.

I don't know why Monbiot is so shocked and tentative here. To me, Brand is clearly a right-wing populist, Britain's answer to Joe Rogan. As such, he is a useful tool to outright fascists. Populism doesn't always drift rightward but it happens often enough to be a well-established historical pattern.

Unlike #GeorgeMonbiot, I instinctively distrusted #RussellBrand right from the start. The whole thing looked like a personality cult with him as the guru. I've never seen any of his videos, though I did see the car crash interview with #JeremyPaxman in which Brand says, "Don't bother to vote". That's the Original Sin as far as I'm concerned. So it doesn't surprise me that he's waded into conspiracy theories like Jesus demonstrating he can walk on water.
