Thanksgiving build project is complete! I got a kit from a enthusiast last month at , and finally got around to building it. The hat emulates a SCSI bus and can be plugged right in to old 68k Macs and used as an external drive, or as a replacement boot drive if installed internally. I can manage disk images stored as files through a web interface or by SCPing into the Pi.

I lost track of the person who gave the kit to me, but I wanted to thank them because this was a huge deal for me. I'm deathly afraid of doing SMB soldering but I managed it anyway. Feels like I leveled up in my build skills with this project. Now I have something that can really help me with archiving and going through Mac disk images, and I'm so grateful. Big shout-out also to @D4rkm4tter for his encouragement and for the most important lesson in choosing the right tip for the soldering job. Thanks also to @chetwisniewski - that's your old Pi B+ under there!

Today's project: fixing my DNS.

Back when I was using an EdgeRouter, I had DNS running on a separate RPi. I was using for filtering and BIND for everything else. DHCP clients would register with and I had a buttload of CNAMEs to make friendly DNS entries on the LAN for various services like , , , , and .

When I switched to (after a terrible experience with the Dream Machine Pro), I went with because it had a built-in plugin. I also settled on the BIND plugin because, hey, one box. The BIND plugin, however, proved to be... unstable. I have to do a lot of hackery on the back end to get DHCP clients to register with it and those changes reset with every reboot. It also doesn't flush journals correctly at all. The plugin maintainer seems apathetic to these issues as well. So far, I've been just dealing with it.

When I was at last month, @v0rtex clued me in that can do what I need. I already knew it handled client DNS registrations properly, but the docs explicitly said "no, we don't do CNAMEs". The problem is that the docs DON'T tell you that you can create Aliases which are basically the same thing! So today I'm going to create my aliases in Unbound, repoint the upstream resolver in AdGuard Home, and finally be done with a bad implementation of BIND.
