Not the greatest clarity (from an 8x10 print I have), but there's a lot here.

If you haven't seen it, here's the recent news story that ran in the Chronicle last Saturday.
We've uncovered the story of the photographer along with how the cabinet was discarded and later found. Still hoping the other two will turn up. I think it's possible. #sfhistory #SanFranciscoHistory

"The first business to advertise in city directories under the heading of “automobile repair”
was, in fact, a bicycle shop, and it was located within the study area of this report. This
was the shop of Leavitt and Bill, owned by John W. Leavitt and John T. Bill, at 307-309
Larkin Street. These two men imported several brands of bicycles to sell, and in 1904
they also began to sell Reo automobiles and to offer general auto repair services. In that
year they had a staff of at least one, a machinist named George H. Woodward. John W.
Leavitt went on to become an important automobile dealer in San Francisco, selling
Oldsmobile, Oakland, Willys, and other major brands through the 1920s. Woodward
later worked in auto repair and opened his own auto parts machine shop in the study area."

Still a couple of extant landmarks on the site of the ballpark.
Talking a lot about found photos this week, particularly sides. They are hard to look at & very easy to toss out. I found this one at SCRAP & I'm glad I did. Send me yours. #sfhistory #SanFranciscoHistory #sanfrancisco #kodachrome

In TWO WEEKS my book will be out in the world! Come celebrate with me and Heather Bourbeau as we talk about San Francisco's forgotten cemeteries on Aug. 29 at @booksonthepark, or tune in online. It's going to be a great conversation!

Thanks to Peter Hartlaub of the SF Chronicle the mystery of the Tiffany Cabinet is getting some exposure (no pun intended)
Here's a gift link to today's Chronicle (but you ought to subscribe like I do) #sfhistory #sanfranciscohistory https://www.sfchronicle.com/vault/article/lost-1960s-photos-start-san-francisco-mystery-18283885.php?utm_source=marketing&utm_medium=copy-url-link&utm_campaign=article-share&hash=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2ZjaHJvbmljbGUuY29tL3ZhdWx0L2FydGljbGUvbG9zdC0xOTYwcy1waG90b3Mtc3RhcnQtc2FuLWZyYW5jaXNjby1teXN0ZXJ5LTE4MjgzODg1LnBocA==&time=MTY5MTkzNzE2ODQwMg==&rid=MGMwMmJjYTgtODJhZS00M2VmLWI5YjYtYTJjZjE4ZjUxZGYx&sharecount=MQ==

Palace of Fine Arts, circa 1964
These aren't the best shots I have of the decrepit PoFA, but they're good examples of why not to trust the date on Kodachrome slides. Dated Aug 1965, the Palace was demolished by Nov 64. These sat in the camera for almost a year! #sfhistory #SanFrancisco #SanFranciscoHistory

Remarkably intact blocks 111 years later.
Only noticeable differences are the Hall of Justice & the International Hotel.
I recall that there was some agreement in the 80s that the Financial District stopped at Sacramento. I guess it did. #sfhistory #SanFrancisco #NorthBeach #Chinatown

View northerly toward the Southern Pacific bridge over Dolores. the two Victorian houses in the background still stand on Cesar Chavez (then Army Street). I didn't notice the painter sitting on top at first. #sfhistory
Stonestown Aerial, circa 1951
Not sure of the date, but I'm close. The Stonestown Apartments seem about done but the shopping center hasn't been started. No Lowell (1962) or Lakeshore Elementary (1953) but really it's about the curve in Lake Merced Boulevard around the arm of Lake Merced. #sfhistory
Cole Valley, circa 1895
View west from about Parnassus & Clayton
I'll admit, this one is hard to visualize but the two houses on the right still stand at 140 & 138 Carl Street. Development ensued soon after this & had already started north of the view toward Haight.

This one cracked me up, a mother pushing the baby down the slide. I think it's at the Zoo, but I'm not 100% sure. How else are you going to learn to have fun?
