Any other #GURPS Goblins fans around? While I've tooted a lot about specific city books I find inspiring, GURPS Goblins isn't _really_ a city book. It takes place in a fantasy/satire Georgian London, but it's not a book _about_ London. It's very much about _campaigning_ in it, though, a feature and distinction it shares with my favorite city books. And it's _really very good at it._
So it's another important inspiration for Hammondal, AND its part of the #SJR100. Superb book. Utterly.
My history with, memories of, and feelings about Tales From the Floating Vagabond are complicated, and include one memory of its designer asking if he could "borrow" some deodorant.
I even played a small but pivotal role in the (maybe) strangest thing about it: that it was published by Avalon Hill, of all places.
Complicated or not, it's still a part of me, and I love it just a little bit, forever.

While the most important TSR game in the #SJR100 is probably Gangbusters (or Marvel Superheroes), Boot Hill deserves its place for, in some ways, being the game to really open my eyes to the design range possible in quasi-historical genre gaming. The western is the pappy of all that's pulpy, and Boot Hill is the grandpappy of wild-west roleplaying (with a couple of good modules under its gun-belt), and it's a #TTRPG I'd still GM if asked. Thanks for the rootin' and also the tootin', Boot Hill.
The #SJR100 is a hundred of the RPGs that mean the most to me, and Dever's world of #Magnamund is one of my favorite gameworlds. The original Magnamund Companion remains its finest presentation, and it's just a rock of inspiration. It's an odd duck in some ways, with a mini-solitaire and a papercraft project and more, but it glows with affection for its subject, lives right where the gaming happens, and inspires me every time I spend a moment with it. Free at the Aon Project. #TTRPG #LoneWolf

The #SJR100 is a list of the RPGs that mean the most to me, which is not to say they're all great works of enduring design 😅
I met Space Patrol later in my gaming life, snagging it as a used bookstore in Dallas during one of my appearances as a guest at A-Kon. It's influence on my work after that (especially on EC, but also on Uresia 2nd) would be hard to overstate, and it's got nothing to do with "quality" in the slick commercial sense. It's about raw, unselfconscious RPG enthusiasm. #TTRPG
Sometimes, I meet a game and fall in love with it when it tries and fails to hire me. I was approached to do the maps for Code of Unaris - an RPG specifically designed for pure-text, chatroom gaming - and I was like "Naw man, for what you want, you need Eric Frickin' Hotz." So they got Eric Frickin' Hotz, which means this game ALSO has perfect maps. I love this weird little game and I wish Goldleaf had been able to stick around. #TTRPG #SJR100
You might suppose, given my other concerns, that I'd be done with Big Eyes, Small Mouth 2nd Edition ... But the #SJR100 is an honest 100, and honestly, if a group asked me to run #BESM2 tomorrow, I absolutely would. For that matter I'd be open to running BESM1, though it lacks the professional ... anything ... of the 2nd Ed. Later editions are slanderous rumor to be quashed and ridiculed, however 😅 I still love BESM2 and always will #TTRPG
There are so many reasons to love Bunnies & Burrows (in any of its flavors and editions), but in terms of why it's important to me, and why it still influences my work daily: it's one of those magical designs that can entice the roleplay-hesitant, even the roleplay-cynical, to step outside themselves and into a character very unlike themselves. That's just one facet of its awesomeness, but it's pretty special. #TTRPG #SJR100 #BnBRPG
The aggressively snarky Underground RPG is a strong contender for my favorite standalone superhero game. It's an entry in the exalted subgenre of "basically an adaptation of X without a license for X," where X in this case is the Marshal Law comic from Epic in the late 80s. Historically, Underground was the first RPG book to be 100% glossy full-color on every page, thus bearing apocalyptic blame for consumerist awfulness since, but I'm still happy to play it. 😅

I'm going to cheat a little for this entry into the #SJR100 because Doctor Who is a very lucky character ... They star in the ONLY licensed property to get a good RPG every single time someone tries. All three of these games are dear to me, which is astonishing. Most licensed RPGs are crud, _especially_ for TV shows I love! And yet, here we are, with the little blue box that could. #TTRPG #DoctorWho
GURPS Witch World is a special game for a lot of reasons, but the reason I keep returning to it is that I've never read a Witch World novel, never really care to, and yet I would jump at the chance to play this anytime someone asked me to. Excellent adapted RPGs are rare. Adapted RPGs so good they call to me even when I don't care about the source material? Wow. And Sasha Miller started writing professionally in the 1950s; how rare is THAT in RPGs? A gem.

Mike Stackpole is, to many, the Rogue Squadron guy ... but to me, he'll always be the Mercenaries, Spies & Private Eyes Guy. It's no mystery that my favorite RPGs are _about_ mystery, and MS&PE is one of the enduring greats, still a fantastic choice for mystery, romance and espionage in the modern world, despite being prehistoric in consumerist terms. Solid GMing advice and a light heart permeate this excellent work. #TTRPG #SJR100 #MSPE #MSnPE #MS&PE

Castle Falkenstein and I, on paper, shouldn't be pals. I'm not a fan of the Victorian vibe generally, and I was never a fan of 1990s-style RPG setting design; I always thought it was too fixated on being a marketable multimedia "IP." But, when Scott Haring raved about this game on the phone one day, his enthusiasm caught me, and then the game did the rest. It's one of the good ones. #SJR100 #TTRPG #CastleFalkenstein

I don't like admitting affection for RPGs with exclamation marks in their titles, but Afterrmath! is an important game from my formative years, or more precisely: the RPG we played was a version of Operation Morpheus, which is a fascinating example of what Medium-Trust Trad could look like when designed with (I assume) a very light editorial hand. We skipped the part, though, where you made yourself as a character. We were there to roleplay, after all! #TTRPG #SJR100 #Aftermath
Chill (original Pacesetter version; later editions are an embarrassing myth) is a "Horror RPG" to the same extent that The Quatermass Xperiment is a horror film, and that suits me just fine. Chill's overtly campy, often-formulaic approach to horror (Chill had an adventure anthology "hosted" by Elvira) reflects the Pacesetter aesthetic perfectly: it's all about the fun, and never much about the taking-seriously. One of those RPGs that makes me feel right at home. #TTRPG #SJR100 #ChillRPG #Chill

Like most GURPS worldbooks, GURPS Swashbucklers is a more-than-complete RPG without troubling yourself with any GURPS (grab whatever system you fancy), and it's one of the better RPGs ever published, especially in the area of historical or MOSTLY-historical-but-ALSO-a-genre RPG design 😊 From roleplay-specific sidebars like "How to be French" to digestible and gameable treatments of history, this one is a must-meet for anyone who cares to buckle a swash. #TTRPG #SJR100 #GURPSSwashbucklers

One of the earliest gaming lessons Greg Costikyan's work taught me was how things open up when we discard mortality as a PC concern. In Paranoia, death was both certain and accounted for (so, nothing to worry about). In Toon, death wasn't possible (so, nothing to worry about). Somewhere in the space between those two, my other games got better, very early on. #SJR100 #TTRPG #Toon
You never forget your first, especially with this much yellow. Before I was a gamer, I was a comics reader, and when this game arrived in the mid-80s, every single Marvel comic carried the full-page ad, and it GOT me. This is the game that lured me in: first RPG I owned, first RPG I ran (badly!), first RPG I sat up with for coffee-fueled overnight prep. Thank you, #MarvelSuperheroes #MSH #TTRPG #SJR100

I think "StarChilde Publications" might be the most embarrassing name for a publisher ever, but their humble 16pp digest-sized booklet RPG punches well above its weight in game design. The PCs begin in a terrible spot, as wholly-owned manufactured life-forms serving a greedy space corp. In a very small work you get some solid space-opera commentary on capitalist fuckery and loyalty between the used. Supplements explore organized crime and more. Good little game-line. #TTRPG #SJR100 #Justifiers
I do have a special affection for fantasy gaming from the UK, and I also love solo gamebooks as inspiration for tabletop, so my affection for the entire Fighting Fantasy (and Advanced Fighting Fantasy) library would be hard to overstate. Blacksand is one of the great FRPG cities, Allansia one of the great realms, and it's all part of Titan, one of the great worlds. Taken together it's one of the finest fantasy RPGs. #TTRPG #SJR100 #FightingFantasy #Titan #Blacksand #Allansia
