Looking at #SMBE23 content here and "there" and seeing how funny it is that our discipline have mixed views between "what gets measured gets done" and "this one metric does not do justice"
I hope people really integrating the nuances in every view as we move the field forward.
Thanks to @officialSMBE for making space for climate activism and to @SanjaHakala, @gaston and @AudreyBras for facilitating an engaging workshop yesterday.
It was great to be able to chat openly about #ClimateBreakdown and #DirectAction together with a room full of evolutionary biologists, geneticists and ecologists yesterday.
See you on the streets!

Great talk by @vsbuffalo at #SMBE23. Using covariance of allele frequencies to quantify drift and selection in temporal data. Surprised to see that the famous results of seasonal variation of alleles frequencies in Drosophila from Bergland et al. 2015 was invalidated.

Eduard ocana-pallares: Reconstruction of the fungal tree of life. Using ML-tree for phylogenetic inference.
Solving the fungal tree of life proveabto he extremely difficult and is a question that scientists have been sealing with for a very long time. Eduard and team used very intricate methods (too long to explain here), using pectin as a root in the fungal tree, thus making huge leaps in understand in the phylogeny of fungi.

Guillia Camply of @rmwaterhouse lab about #moulting genes in #arthropods. The most diverse group shares the trait of moulting. We can see it in the fossils record and every where around us but it is largely understudied. Trying to understand the history and the diversity of gene families and expression of this trait around all arthropods. Doing exceptional work of comparing between 150 proteomes and 65 gene families. How do change occur in arthropoda?

Sandra Goutte: Anuran color polymorphism is common.
Single foxD3 locus is associated with dorsal coloration in P. robeensis. It's involved in neural crest differentiation and irridophore differentiation in fish as well.
Frogs with green phenotypes express higher levels of foxdD3 than brown frogs.
Green and brown skins are different at subcellular level!

Ricardo Papa- Predictability of evolution by studying butterfly wing patterns.
Using wntA KO, they found out that this gene is responsible for different phenotypes in different species of butterflies of the same genus.
Optix regulatory network is divergent between these species. They found an element that exists in only two members of this group.
