On Twitter, I've seen some great uses of services like Linktree by first responder agencies during large scale responses. And tons of cross posted links back to Facebook. Agencies really need to reassess their use of Twitter as a response tool now. #EMGtwitter #SMEM
Another example of a rescue enabled by the "Emergency SOS" satellite capabilities of the iPhone 14.

Twitter Chaos Endangers Public Safety, Emergency Managers Warn
Twitter is a crucial communication tool during disasters, but impersonators and other problems under the current leadership have emergency managers on edge.
@krobertory @sct_r I guess it depends on what kind of interaction you hope to have with your local agency: just one-way emergency alerts, or something more interactive or conversational in between disasters. It's highly likely that those two systems (alert vs interactive) are different. #smem #emgtwitter

To me there's a difference between a relentless (if true) barrage of climate-change doom-scrolling fodder and the dissemination of real-time public information during extreme weather or natural disasters. I am interested in the latter, and avoid following users that are (mostly) lecturing about climate change. Just my personal choice. Emergency responders make my life better and are an example of communication that has tangible impact at the "normal citizen" level. #wildfire #SMEM
I like to find raptors caught in the act of sitting on the towers with the Western US wildfire Alert network web cams. Often eagles, but this time was so fun...a California Condor! I was able to use his wing tag to find out his life story. Also, great resource to look for and follow fires day and night.

@silke Community disaster response could presumably be coordinated through Mastodon, as has been done through Twitter. Coordinated hashtag use would be even more important here to deal with the synchronous timeline and lack of search function. Best case would be if emergency-related hashtag conventions on Mastodon could be established in advance. Then everyone in a location would how to find relevant and current information in the event of an emergency. Could be as simple as #CityDisaster—so people in Vancouver could all immediately know to use/follow “VancouverEarthquake” hashtag. Then maybe you add a function or subtopic to the end, like “VancouverEarthquakeEvacuation”. #SMEM #EmergencyManagement #naturaldisasters #EarthquakeMastodon #earthquake #flood #emergencyresponse
