Tune in for the SSB Symposium "Paving the road to the phenome: challenges in working with a large number of phenotypes" in Kiva Auditorium
@tool_man @kas Regarding #NNCP and #SSB...
There are some similarities; both are designed to work in varying conditions. SSB might be most similar to NNCP's multicast areas support.
There are differences; NNCP is designed as a general-purpose tool, focusing primarily on closed networks, while SSB is designed as a special-purpose social network, focusing primarily on open networks (though both can be used outside of their focus area). 1/
Hello #ScienceMastodon, this is my #introduction. I am an Assitant Professor/Researcher at #UNAM in #Mexico. I work on Evolutionary Biology, Systematics, Biogeography, etc w/ #birds #mammals. I co-organize #SSB2023 the 5th Standalone Meeting of the Society of Systematic Biologists #SSB in January 2023 in #MexicoCity https://www.ib.unam.mx/ib/ssb2023/

I’m an evolutionary biologist at the Institut de Biologie de l’École Normale Supérieure in Paris. I’m interested in explaining variation in biodiversity under an evolutionary perspective. For that I develop and apply phylogenetic probabilistic models of diversification, biogeography and trait evolution using Bayesian inference. #introducion #SSEfolks #asnfolks #SSB #EvolutionaryBiology #julialang #bayesian

9/ I am reminded of #SSB / #Scuttlebutt, that platform I wish I would love, but keep finding a subpar experience. As a closed system for social networking among friend and family, it could well be excellent, especially in limited-connectivity scenarios. As a global-scale social network, it really struggles, despite having at its core a rather Mastodon-like approach to building a limited social graph based on who you are following and your followers.
@mhoye @ehashman Playing out your thought a bit, what does this mean for the #Fediverse? It seems already people's experience is highly dependent on their instance admins; mine is great and my experience is fantastic. Do we need more tools to share ban lists, etc. between instances and individuals? On #Scuttlebutt (#SSB) it's all on the individual since it is fully decentralized (instanceless) and that is a fairly negative experience IMHO. OTOH, so is twitter, so 🤷
@dheadshot @ajroach42 I tried out #SSB for awhile. My observations: 1) Every client quite buggy. The main desktop one is usable, if quirky; the mobile ones are just too buggy to be useful. 2) The append-only protocol is going to get old real fast. 3) It can achieve offline social media. Though if we take an expansive view, Usenet and mailing lists got there a few decades earlier, albeit with the need for a cental server. 4) SSB still needs central serverish things
So I'm using Secure #Scuttlebutt (#SSB) more than Mastodon/Birdsite now.. 🤔
Currently looking at p2p tools (excluding al Blockchain stuff): #Hypercore, #Cabal, #SSB, #Scuttlebutt, #IPFS & co

Unlike mastodon you don't need to register for an account, so it's more like #ssb, but designed to work in browser without having to deal with node.
