Please stop making SSO part of your enterprise plans! We're a small group and would love to get started with your free or low cost options but not being able to use our auth system is a _problem_. Security is not an optional extra!

I am seeing a big burst of #fedi interest in #IndieAuth, #OAuth, #OpenID, #OpenIDConnect (surprise! #migration.) What I am not seeing is anyone picking up the ball and running with it.

Anyone here running an #ActivityPub service? Have experience with an authentication system? #SSO? There are a *ton* of people interested in coalescing, if someone can start the snowball.

I used to be a big proponent of #SSO when it came to #authentication in my projects. But after a few rewrites where I wanted to remove said support and not to break the access for users, I think I like leaning on well established libraries (read: #devise) better.

Thinking about this a bit more, maybe a single sign on system would work. So someone registered on this server could sign into another server as user @ mindly.social and it would authenticate the login via the mindly.social server. Of course this would only work if other server is open to public otherwise server admin would still need to approve access.

It took me a while, but I've finally managed to get my #SSO working on all of the platypush.tech servers 🎉

You can now register and login with a single account on:

- The #Mastodon instance (https://social.platypush.tech)
- The #Gitlab instance (https://git.platypush.tech)
- The #Matrix instance (matrix.platypush.tech)

And I've also got it configured on my #NextCloud instance (it was the most painful one to configure), though through a different realm so I won't get random people poking in my personal cloud :)

Things I've learned in the process:

- SSO on your network is amazing! You can also configure WebAuthn over e.g. Yubikey, and you won't have to keep track of tons of different credentials across several services. No Google/Facebook/Microsoft or any third-party SSO solutions required.

- #Keycloak is the most popular and complete solution, but it's unjustifiably heavy. It's maintained by Red Hat, it runs on top of an obese web server like #JBoss, it takes at least 1 GB of RAM to run, it comes with tons of unintuitive configurations, and it screams "heavyweight enterprise sh*t" from everywhere. Wish there was a more lightweight solution with a less steep learning curve.
