269 followers · 10014 posts · Server rage.love@dot You know it's funny you say that because on #MENA here (& many other hashtags, but can't ramble too long) that was most of what we'd seen too, just liberal academics looking for others like them to boost their careers…but there's definitely power in a focused attempt to set the direction of something while it's still new so if #SWANA seems already "taken over" then you make a good point.
About twitter, from our experience when we were active there yes there is definitely a very large & active twitter community around the MENA/SWANA region in general & the Arab community specifically. That hashtag was in use too but in the spaces we were mostly around, it would have been criticized a lot for a few different reasons (won't get into it unless you ask), so it probably went by other names, especially in arabic or other regional languages.
On here, we've come across only a handful of left/progressive/whatevs people from MENA/SWANA, at least a couple of them aren't active anymore…also, we'd heard before we joined that there was some intense hostility towards Palestinian users who left because of it (which makes sense there's a lot of white supremacists & casual zionists here 😕). I am a PhD student in Islamic and Arabic Studies in Münster, Germany, working on practices of evidence and strategies of verification of prophetic descent in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century North Africa. In particular, I am examining texts on a particular descent community claiming prophetic descent: the descendants of ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jilānī, from a translocal perspective.
Also: I am excited to see something growing here that I didn't think was possible a few months ago. Glad to be here with you all!

"Ne dites plus "proche orient" ou "moyen orient" mais préfèrez l'usage du terme "#Asie du Sud-Ouest". Le terme "moyen" ou "proche orient" (middle east or near east) est une référence directe à une vision du monde #eurocentrée (à l'origine, pour l'empire britannique et leur #colonie indienne).
D'un point de vue géopolitique : l'Egypte est souvent incluse dans la zone, et parfois même d'autres pays situés au nord de l'#Afrique. On dira alors les pays du sud-ouest asiatique et d'Afrique du nord. Les anglophones useront de #SWANA (South West Asia - North Africa)."
