Hard to see, but there are two mantids in this photo. I wonder if they are the same subspecies and if the smaller one is hiding from the bigger one. Also not sure if they are the same sex, males are usually smaller and get devoured by the larger female before/during/after mating! San Jose, California, Sept 2023.

Can you guess what these interesting looking “fruits” are?

Turns out they aren’t fruits at all. These are galls created by the tree in response to Gall Wasps laying eggs in trees stems. This is a one sided relationship where the tree redirects nutrients to the gall to feed the wasp larva.
