#introduction Hello, I am new to mastodon and so far am enjoying it here. I left all social media in April '22 but recently I heard good things about the #fediverse and thought I'd give this a try. My specialty is data technology and I'm presently on hachyderm.io. As a secular Buddhist, I am particularly interested in helping to create an online #sangha and spread Buddhist philosophy and the practices of mindfulness and meditation. I also enjoy reading about NLP, astronomy, math and archaeology.

When one has faith in the Tathagata,
unshakable and well established,
and virtuous behavior that is good,
loved and praised by the noble ones;

when one has confidence in the #Sangha
and one’s view has been straightened out,
they say that one is not poor,
that one’s life is not lived in vain.

Therefore an intelligent person,
remembering the #Buddhas’ teaching,
should be intent on faith and virtuous behavior,
confidence and vision of the #Dhamma.

2/5 - Wrong Buddhism is very real.

Like any group, a #Buddhist #Sangha can harbor toxicity, #indoctrination, #abuse. No school is exempt. If you join a Sangha, please be aware of the power dynamic in the group. Try to gauge if the group has a healthy way of dealing with issues, has a proper way of discussing and processing abuse reports; what way do they look at the victims, how do they explain or excuse the abusers.

We did some meditation, some chanting and heard the teaching to Meghia by the #Buddha on the importance of #Sangha.

Then one of the women often to drive me down to #Santos as she lives here, and helped me sort out a bus ticket back to the airport.

Really love being part of such a welcoming, worldwide Buddhist movement 💛💙❤️

I am inspired by #ThichNhatHanh's writing about building a community of mindful living, what MLK called the beloved community, right where we are. No need to wait for the rest of the world to catch up.
