Saul was first king over Israel, said to be a man of power and impressive in his appearance (1Sa 9:1-2). He started off as a very strong king, loved by the people and obedient to God, but later he had turned back from following God and did not keep the commandments. He feared the people and listened to them over God, which led to God raising up David to replace Saul.
David was strong, though he made mistakes. He had such a soft heart and love for God that he turned back to Him, not just by saying sorry, but by walking before the Lord in truth, righteousness, and in uprightness of heart (1Ki 3:6).
God is looking for people who are after His heart; people who are not fearful or care about the opinion of man, but willing to turn back to the Lord.
