Inspired by @markwitton 's recent question about Magyarosaurus, I decided re-read Justin Tweet's blog post about Magyarosaurus at the Equatorial Minnesota blog:

equatorialminnesota.blogspot.c

It's very good, and it's part of his wonderful, exhaustive series Your Friends the Titanosaurs, which should be of interest to anyone interested in sauropods:

remember when Brach's was great candy?

those were the good old days, when Brachiosaurs hisself made the candy, and he knew we all deserved great candy. Then humans stole the company and enshitified the candy and wrote poor Brachiosaurs out of the history books.

thought: there needs to be a dinosaur named Halcyonosaurus. Preferably a sauropod, and arguably with proper latinization rather than the sloppiness I've used here, but I'm not picky.

random question: there's no skull known from any Patagotitan specimen. But, every museum mount I've seen photos of has a skull, bc reasons. What is that skull based on?

To my non-paleontologist eye, it kind of looks like Sarmientosaurus, but only approximately. It doesn't really look much like Rapetosaurus or Tapuiasaurus. It kind of looks like Nemegtosaurus, but with a longer muzzle and a few other differences.

so ... what is it based on?

curious facts about the Triassic:

about 50.5 million years long

divided into Early, Middle, and Late Triassic parts

but the Late Triassic is about 35.6 million years long, making it about 70.5% of the total!

Conclusion: most of the Triassic was fashionably late, clearly the reason it features the origins of so many cool groups, like Tanystropheids, Plesiosaurs, Sharovipteryx, Pterosaurs, Sauropodomorphs, and that's just the tetrapods, there's so many more.

@Gizz47 and I have just put a framed Titanosaurus scene by @john in our hallway: it's basically the first thing you see when you enter our house now. The image is from John's recent book "A History of Painting (with Dinosaurs)", which you can read all about here: markwitton-com.blogspot.com/20, and buy from links here: johnconway.art/a_history_of_pa

2 lii watching a fresh snowfall. Not sure if it ever snowed in their habitat, but let's just pretend.
I'm also still figuring out procreate and drawing backgrounds.

Happy holidays!

Tataouinea, a rebachiosaur
Named to honor
that same city of Tunisia
Which inspired Tatooine

Tataouinea, a diplodocoid
Belonging to that same clade
Named for Diplodocus
That same beast
Whose vertebrae were seen
By R2D2 and C3PO
On Tatooine
Behind the skull of a Krayt Dragon

Tatooine, the world which calls all Jedi
Marks Tataouinea and Diplodocus as
Sauropod Jedi

A slightly late and early

A better look at the Nottingham Natural History Museum's 3D-printed skull of Dippy the Diplodocus.

The museum was one several museums to receive a replica skull like this as part of the 'Real World Science' network. More about that here: nhm.ac.uk/about-us/national-im

Note how, in addition to the bone, the replica includes the metal armature at the back of the skull.

@AdamStuartSmith Absolutely! And usually artfully arranged so it looks as if they are munching on the tree.

I wrote a poem for

How the sauropod got its name

Look at that size,
what a thundering bulk!
Look at those thighs,
I declare it a hulk!

Look at that neck,
what a length, what a feature!
Look at its rump,
such a whip-tailed creature!

Look at those jaws,
on the smallest of heads!
Look at those teeth,
they remind me of pegs!

So, what shall we call it then,
something unique?
Nah, look at those toes,
it has lizard-like feet.

My wife made a pyramid and cylinder out of baby bell wax. I made a sauropod.

It’s so here’s a tiny tail vertebrae I worked on recently. All the fossils from this Utah quarry are this color, a very rare thing!
