The caterpillar feeds on types of sallow, which were traditionally viewed by foresters as a weed and rooted out.
The species declined steadily during the twentieth century, but has more recently seen some expansion in its range. In the latest Red List, its status has moved from 'Near Threatened' to 'Least Concern'.

If you were watching tonight's episode of #WildIsles, you will have caught the dramatic display of His Imperial Majesty, the Purple Emperor! π¦π
This striking butterfly flies high in the treetops of well-wooded landscapes in central-southern England where it feeds on aphid honeydew and tree sap. π³
But don't be fooled by its beauty! In a quest for salts and minerals, the Purple Emperor is also known to have an appetite for mud, carrion and animal dung. π©

White-letter Hairstreak eggs have been hatching in Exmouth, Devon. π
This species overwinters as a tiny but fully formed caterpillar inside a tiny egg case attached to an elm twig to feed for a few months. The caterpillar, when it emerges in the spring, then feeds exclusively on new elm leaves and flowers.

The State of UKβs Butterflies 2022 report has been released today and it's not good news
80% of butterflies in the UK have declined since the 1970s π¦π
This is a huge cause for concern as butterflies are a vital part of the ecosystem and their steep decline is a clear warning signal of the wider biodiversity crisis.
We need urgent action to turn things around.

Winter is an important time for every species of butterfly and moth, no matter what stage of the lifecycle they are in π π¦
We need to let them rest and keep them safe so they can make it through to spring. So hold off on the hedge cutting, leave stems sticking out and step away from the rake!
Here are our top tips for helping butterflies and moths this winter π https://butrfli.es/3XDtC7t

Brimstone butterflies start to become more active for short periods of time after rays of sunshine on warmer winter days, and then fully wake from hibernation in February/March.
They are often a welcome reminder that spring is around the corner!

Be chilled with nature! Peacocks are the ultimate laid-back butterfly species in winter.
They are one of the few butterflies that overwinter as adults, but as they rely on external sources of heat, they are forced to remain inactive and therefore lie dormant until the warmer weather arrives. βοΈ

Relax and give nature a chance! π π¦
Orange-tip butterflies overwinter as a chrysalis. They are known to hang from plant stems, so itβs important to leave the strimming for later in the year. They can also be found on other hard surfaces such as fences, so try to leave them hanging out in peace.
