This looks to be a pretty interesting , but not interesting enough for the general public I guess since the reporter felt the need to abruptly add to the discussion. lol Apparently isn't science if it's not about .

I love science reporting.

The scientist: “Planetary engulfment has been predicted for a very long time, but their frequency was not well known… So it was certainly exciting to realize we had found one.”

The article: Y'all we saw a star burp. sciencenews.org/article/first-

So thrilled that our Vienna international club invited the creative minds behind the Austrian science magazine.

So exciting to see these people create an exciting space for magazines & science writing, especially in this era and economy. Extra exciting that their first principles emerge from the philosophy, sociology, and theory of science.

Thanks for highlighting this thread! I agree with most aspects mentioned.

An important additional factor, though, is that some of the tend to oversell their results to their comms department as well. Because they need visibility to move forward in their careers? Comes down to the incentives of our research system, I guess. And, speaking from experience, not every scientist easily accepts if the comms dep doesn't push their paper 😉

I realize this might be a terrible way to decide what scientific research to cover, but...

... if I read a study and I can think of a headline or lede that includes a pun, I pitch it. 😅

Science journalists: collect 'em all!

Here are three to start.

@ianrosewrites
@JenLucPiquant
@Trailanderror

Of @JenLucPiquant:

"...hired by the American Physical Society after they found out that it was easier to teach physics to people who knew how to write than to teach writing to people who knew physics."

An acute observation that can be generalized.

People who slice and dice academic reports and serve up tasty and nutititious treats for our average brains.

@athenamedia Hey Helen, I was just passing by but you need # for people to see this outside of this time zone.

Assuming that you want that I'd suggest:

Which should help a bit!

Are you also a ? 😀 Or more of a journalist? Is a thing? Apparently!

You probably already know that are ubiquitous in our environment. But you may not have read this latest paper from researchers at the University of Auckland - it quantifies and identifies the microplastics found in the city's air. It paints a worrying picture. So I interviewed the lead author and wrote all about it for Forbes. Please have a read: forbes.com/sites/lauriewinkles
