It's #ScienceWeek Downunder and #GeoscienceAustralia has a #geoscience education display at the Woden Plaza for the weekend. The displays explain how #EarthScientists use the properties of rocks like magnetism to map what is deep underground to better understand the #geology. Also a very cool display about the rocks in #Minecraft. No idea how many of you are local Canberrans, but go have a look if you can!

National #ScienceWeek runs for NINE days, so maybe you can’t trust scientists 🤣
I know we’re not supposed to talk about money but, man, it’s expensive to do #SciComm or #Outreach.
This year I will earn $14,000 for being a part-time #PhD student, even though it takes up tonnes of my time. Scholarships and a bunch of contracting and internships might get me up to another ~$40,000 but also give me months of health issues from lack of sleep, trying to work ~full-time on top of a PhD.
This August (#ScienceWeek month) I will do about 16 days of events on top of my normal work, which combined will likely take me over 100 hours to prepare for. I have never been paid to speak at an event, and they typically don’t offer any stipend even when I have to spend hundreds of dollars renting a car or staying in hotels around Tasmania.
Science outreach is so important to me; I love Tasmanian, community-focused efforts to uplift people into higher education and STEM. I give freely as much as I am able to. And everyone involved in organising events are doing their best with what they have….
…but this might honestly be the last year I can afford it if I don’t manage to turn it into an actual job. Expecting scientists (especially grad students) to do both is getting totally infeasible.

We are heading into #ScienceWeek here in Australia.
And there is a poll :goose_hacker:
Favourite #AustralianAnimal sound.
I am really lucky that so many of these sounds form the sonic backdrop of my day.
But there are no #penguins listed *humph!*

The month of #ScienceWeek begins! I've got an action-packed ~5 weeks coming up, full of #SciComm and #Space content all around lutruwita / #Tasmania! If you're keen to hang out, or see some great local #science content, check out some of the events below 👇
🌘 Aug 4 - presenting at Beaker Streets "Young Tassie Scientists After Hours: Science for Kids (for Adults)" at #TMAG
🤖 Aug 5 - watching @parisba argue that #AI is anything but #creative in "The Great Debate" at The Theatre Royal
🍎 Aug 6 - speaking at the ABC Ockham's Razor event, LIVE at Willie Smith's Apple Shed down #Huonville
🛰️ Aug 12 - speaking at TastroFest up in #Devonport, as part of a series of presentations running all next week with the support of Libraries Tasmania
🏰 Aug 14 - mingling at the Government House launch of #ScienceWeek 2023, likely whispering in people's ears about my plans for a science centre out west...
🚗 Aug 15-18 - travelling around Tas on the #YoungTassieScientists Southern road trip! This includes about a dozen schools plus at least one event with Children's University!
🎙️ Aug 16 - giving the ECR address at Hobart's #ScienceMeetsParliament dinner, hosted by Minister for Science and Technology, Hon Madeleine Ogilvie MP
🎪 Aug 19 - staffing a booth at Inspiring Tasmania's #FestivalOfBrightIdeas / #FoBI down at Salamanca
🎓 Aug 22 - talking futures and opportunities as the occasional address at the afternoon session of Winter Graduations for #UTAS's College of Sciences and Engineering
(Then I take a week off to catch up on normal work + sleep, and do 2 days of #SciComm training with #SuperstarsOfSTEM)
🏫 Sep 1 - back at it, as a keynote for the 'It Takes a Spark!' #STEM #Education conference, alongside the fantastic Dr Lila Landowski!
(Then maybe I get a break from speaking for a bit, at least until the Australian Space Research Conference comes to town a few weeks later 😬)

Profiles are up now for #YTS2023 - a program in which STEM research students from UTAS travel around the state presenting #scicomm talks and interactive demonstrations to kids of all ages during #NatSciWeek!
Young Tassie Scientists is a hoot (last year I even got to speak at a science centre and travel to King Island!) and it’s a great way for kids to meet scientists in a casual and friendly environment. We especially like to take our Tasmanian scientists back to their roots, to show students people just like them who became #science superstars.
If you’re involved with a school or museum or similar, make sure you sign up on the website!
