National runs for NINE days, so maybe you can’t trust scientists 🤣

I know we’re not supposed to talk about money but, man, it’s expensive to do or .

This year I will earn $14,000 for being a part-time student, even though it takes up tonnes of my time. Scholarships and a bunch of contracting and internships might get me up to another ~$40,000 but also give me months of health issues from lack of sleep, trying to work ~full-time on top of a PhD.

This August ( month) I will do about 16 days of events on top of my normal work, which combined will likely take me over 100 hours to prepare for. I have never been paid to speak at an event, and they typically don’t offer any stipend even when I have to spend hundreds of dollars renting a car or staying in hotels around Tasmania.

Science outreach is so important to me; I love Tasmanian, community-focused efforts to uplift people into higher education and STEM. I give freely as much as I am able to. And everyone involved in organising events are doing their best with what they have….

…but this might honestly be the last year I can afford it if I don’t manage to turn it into an actual job. Expecting scientists (especially grad students) to do both is getting totally infeasible.

We are heading into here in Australia.

And there is a poll :goose_hacker:

Favourite sound.

I am really lucky that so many of these sounds form the sonic backdrop of my day.

But there are no listed *humph!*

Profiles are up now for - a program in which STEM research students from UTAS travel around the state presenting talks and interactive demonstrations to kids of all ages during !

Young Tassie Scientists is a hoot (last year I even got to speak at a science centre and travel to King Island!) and it’s a great way for kids to meet scientists in a casual and friendly environment. We especially like to take our Tasmanian scientists back to their roots, to show students people just like them who became superstars.

If you’re involved with a school or museum or similar, make sure you sign up on the website!

It’s National Science Week and Johnathan Davis and I are celebrating the cerebral with badges!

Find out what’s on in Canberra:
scienceweek.net.au/your-state/

I can highly recommend ANU Cybernetics: Speech Recognition Technology with Kathy Reid on 18 August;
and Rainbows in Science with Bry the Fly Guy on 19 August.

Text on badges:
Johnathan’s says “Science doesn’t care what you think”.
Emma’s says “You Matter. Until you multiply yourself by the speed of light squared. Then you energy.”
Background image on Emma’s office wall is artwork created about and at the Honeysuckle tracking station in the ACT.
