Went for the first session of a dry eye Clinical trial today. At the end, they had dilated my eyes and I couldn't see any of the detail on my phone screen. So, I put in my ear buds and turned on TalkBack so I could still use my phone.
An example of how having some general assistive tech knowledge can be helpful in a pinch.

@Mrfunkedude oooh interesting. I’ve heard that a big block of hashtags is problematic too. This is where we need an actual #ScreenReader user to help.

@FisherTX14 @tarajdactyl yes. I’m the same. I have one or two other accounts but feel this (rather more #ADHD one) has pretty much become my main account now.
On hashtags if you use them in the body of your message rather than at the end it makes for a much better experience for #ScreenReader users as the hashtags have not only searchability but gain context too.
If you want to give people chance to skip past then a #ContentWarning is best 😇

Good morning.
Yesterday I worked on writing a short story. Made good progress. Hoping to read through again today, and start edits.
Just a quick reminder. All Uncovered Myths books income this year will go to help pay for my power chair that I need to keep my pain levels down.

@aspiememes this is very good.
Hoping this is taken the right way. It would be fab if you could accommodate #ScreenReader users in your posts: adding alt text to the images means they can get in on the jokes too. The other way you can really help is with fewer, capitalised (CamelCase) hashtags. All those hashtags are read out one-by-one and without capitalisation the tools tend to spell them out too. Takes ages :(
Thanks for reading this far :)

@autismsupsoc these are lovely :infinity_rainbow: but I imagine they’re a bit of an nightmare for #ScreenReader peeps.
Not suggesting you stop them at all. I wonder if a CW might give them a chance to step past them.
@infinity On lord... Please, Please.
Make your profile accessible for those using screen readers.
Please don't use the "fancy fonts". Screen readers don't know these are fonts and will read them as symbols.
Even those who don't have to use screen readers have a really hard time reading the content of your profile.
Please do better, the community will be thankful.
It's not rocket science.

Now I'm wondering... How do #ScreenReader-s read my toots where I end the sentences with tildes~?
It's my way of showing I speak in a happily manner/tone, but I don't want it to take away the #accessibility factor.
Screen reader users, is it annoying to you when I use tildes in sentences? #tech #a11y

@souwei
Hi! I don’t use a screen reader personally, but I’ve been trying to learn better habits to improve the experience of those who do. So far I can say for sure: CamelCase for hashtags (eg #ScreenReader) so words get broken up correctly, and alt-text for images.
Hope you’re able to connect with some users who can help!
Hence now a question to #screenreader using folks: What screen readers are most commonly used (#Android and/or #Linux #Ubuntu only please)? Do you use the inbuilt screen reader or do you utilize some third-party tool?
The reason I ask is because I want to test my #website making sure screen readers won't have troubles with my website. #accessibility #a11y
I also want to hear more about how I can make my website accessible for everyone.

#ScreenReader crowd and other people who are knowledgeable on #accessibility of websites: I need your feedback on this idea.
Since my #website is supposed to be built The Old Way, and I want to put A LOT of decorations, I thought of an idea for some people to enjoy the actual content without their eyes go brrr when looking at the graphics — make an alternative page that has all the menu links, proper text etc., just without the graphic diarrhea I'm going to create. No marquees, no funky effects - just raw content. I attached an image below of what it would look like (image is from the original World Wide Web site from CERN)

@souwei Hi, not an expert, but I have a little knowledge about it.
I think a #screenreader will tell the user that there is an image. It is impossible for the person to discern if the image is decorative or if the alt-text is missing. Therefore you should at least put an alt-text that says "decorative image" or something of the sort.
I gladly stand corrected by actual screen reader users.
Question for #ScreenReader users - how do you #AltText images on a website?
In detail: Do I only add alt text to images that are important (i.e. logos, buttons etc.) or do I also have to alt text stuff that don't carry any proper function and are decorative only ? (which imo makes no sense to me as they're supposed to only be seen?)
@autisticrealms oh. Just seen your post!
Tapping the hashtag to find similar posts is as good as the search and in v4 soon you’ll be able ti subscribe to hashtags and have them in your local timeline too.
One other tip. #ScreenReader users report it being helpful to have hashtags online as it gives them the immediate context of the sentence (rather than stacking them all at the end). 😇
As a new admin on a small instance I beg of you all to please properly format your hashtags. I can't keep up with the sheer volume of them that need to be camel-cased and edited before approval. Did over 2000 last week.
#CamelCase #ScreenReader #accessibility
@lapingvino @ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic genuinely I don't know and am past my last fact on this. I've not heard a #ScreenReader use Mastodon so unsure how it actually pronounces names with emojis.
I know:
1 - emojis *should* be avoided in names
3 - hashtags should be inline rather than at the end and written in CamelCase.
4 - image descriptions should be factual descriptions of what can be seen rather than an extension of how it makes you feel.
That's about all I know for certain on #accessibility here.
Can someone educate me on how to use AltText correctly? I think mine are too much to the point? And is it useful to put colors in there? Mine are usually something like: a painting of a turtle on a blue background.
