Seamus Heaney died on 30 August 2013 in Dublin. He was buried in his home village of Bellaghy, in the same graveyard as his parents, young brother, and other family members. He texted his final words, "Noli timere" (Latin: "Be not afraid"), to his wife, Marie, minutes before he died.

This poem by the late great #SeamusHeaney sums up today perfectly. There’s still a bit of light in the sky!
Sheer, bright-shining spring, spring as it used to be,
Cold in the morning, but as broad daylight
Swings open, the everlasting sky
Is a marvel to survivors.
And here's Heaney reading "Postscript". #Poetry #SeamusHeaney https://youtu.be/gpr3RPcynT4

On 10 December 1995 #SeamusHeaney was awarded the Nobel prize in Literature. In his acceptance speech he recalled listening to the radio as a child and becoming familiar with the names of the stations on the dial, places like Leipzig and Oslo and Stuttgart and Warsaw and, of course, with Stockholm. 'I little thought that I would ever visit it, never mind end up being welcomed to it as a guest of the Swedish Academy and the Nobel Foundation.' (NLI)

When I made this #embroidery I was thinking of the poem ‘The Cure at Troy’ by Seamus Heaney, and the lines:
"History says, don’t hope on this side of the grave. But then, once in a lifetime the longed for tidal wave of justice can rise up, and hope and history rhyme.
So hope for a great sea change on the far side of revenge. Believe that a further shore is reachable from here. Believe in miracles and cures and healing wells."
