So I have aubergines, carrots, beetroot, turnips, fennel, leeks, a savoy cabbage, garlic, mint and dill all for £12. I will be pickling some of the fennel and the turnips (one of the beetroots will go in with the turnips to give the gorgeous, traditional pink colour) and making a smoky tomato & lentil dish with the aubergines, then topped with feta & baked. I am awaiting inspiration for the rest.

Right, I’m off to the market to buy seasonal veg & herbs to build my week’s menu around. First, however I have to locate my debit card in order to get actual cash out to pay for them! My phone will not work there. The pandemic definitely changed the way I pay for everything.

Well, maybe #Kentiverse can settle a debate.  I’m told that in #Kent in days of yore i.e. 1960s you could go to a tea shop and get toasted buttered ( #English ) #crumpets in the winter but not Summer, and toasted buttered #teaCakes in the Summer but not Winter.  Possibly neither in #hotCrossBun season, we’re not sure.

The new-season mandarins I've grabbed from the supermarket over the past couple of weeks have been delicious. I really miss them during the months when locally grown citrus isn't available. Tonight I had my first taste of this season’s asparagus and it was glorious. I toasted it with ice cold cava and followed it up with excellent tapas whilst enjoying the new adaption of Agatha Christie’s ‘Why Didn’t the Ask Evans’. An excellent Friday night even if I already know why 😋

One of my goals is to localize my #Mexican #cooking - instead of importing a bunch of stuff that goes into "real" #MexicanFood, especially during the winter, I want to get better at working with what grows here in the #PNW. Winter squashes; mushrooms; leeks; pears and apples; fiddleheads; salmon; even localized veggies from other cultures like #Chinese or #Japanese veggies.

The black grapes I have been buying from Woolies lately have been top-quality - firm, sweet & juicy. I've also been picking up a melonball (a small whole watermelon) each week and they've been keeping well in the fridge - haven't gone soft or soggy or dry, even 5 or 6 days after first being cut open. #food #groceries #fruit #veggies #Australia #SeasonalFood
