@matbury Hi Matt, I'm not saying that there's no role for guidance from adults. In fact I think that's really vital. I'm saying it should happen under the direction of the young person and with their consent - not arbitrarily according to curriculum and age-related standards. #SelfDirectedEducation

@matbury yes. If a student wishes to write an essay or report to show their understanding of a topic, they are free and encouraged to do so. I can't see much reason they'd plagiarise from a computer if that was the case. If they have no desire to write an essay or report, they are under no compulsion to do so. They are free to use their time and energy to pursue what is most meaningful, useful and enjoyable to them. #SelfDirectedEducation

So I'm #ActuallyAutistic, a proponent of #monotropism, a lover of #linguistics and the science of #perception, as well as #physics and #chemistry (which I teach for a living). I'm very interested in #ForestSchool and #selfDirectedEducation, and just #education in general.

My politics are probably best described as #ecosocialist (I'm a @ScottishGreens member, but I worry sometimes about some of the things associated with the wider Green movement).

I also love #tea and #veganFood, and may or may not post about these from time to time. I certainly used to.

#introduction time -

I'm Gerard Mazza, a #writer and #activist from Western Australia

I worked for 5 years as a high school English teacher, which I found enlivening and frustrating in fairly equal measure, eventually becoming fed up with the way we do education. I'm interested in #SelfDirectedEducation and finding ways to encourage authentic learning that avoid coercion and hierarchy

In 2019, inspired by the upswell of climate activism happening around the world, I decided to quit work and do climate stuff full time, with a focus on #DirectAction

For the last year or so, a lot of my focus has been on working with different people and groups to try to stop the fossil fuel expansion and destruction of cultural heritage that Woodside and others plan at Murujuga, the Burrup Peninsula (See my article here to learn what that's all about: https://greens.org.au/magazine/what-you-need-know-about-burrup-hub)

I recently relocated near Murujuga in Karratha, Western Australia on Ngarluma Country. I've spent most of my life on Wadandi Noongar country (Bunbury) and Whadjuk Noongar country (Perth)

I also recently started working part time at Ngaarda Media, a First Nations media hub in Ieramagadu/Roebourne - helping to tell stories for and with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community

I've always enjoyed reading and writing. This year I've started publishing some freelance work

I'm interested in conversations about:

- Strategies and tactics in climate activism
- #ClimateJustice and intersectionality
- #ClimateEmotions
- Doomerism, hope, and all the spaces in between
- New paradigms for #education

I also love pop music and have been burning the new Taylor Swift album into my brain with repeated listens this past week or so
