‘What Exactly Is “#Neurodiversity"? Using Accurate Language about #Disability Matters in #Schools’
#TheConversation #MichaelBaker
“[The term] Neurodiversity ... reflects the notion that all ‘bodyminds’ work in diverse ways.
“The medical model of disability says impairment is equated with being broken and in need of a fix.
“[T]he social model argues humans naturally come in a variety of bodyminds, which are changed and shaped by our environment.”

A great video lesson on #antisemitism from https://www.tiktok.com/@simkern on #tiktok at the link.
“If a story contains AS elements, is that entire story AS? Is it *bad*? Are you *bad* for consuming it?”

I love "they." I've even been using it with people who appear gender conforming but I don't specifically know their preference.
Old ‘They,’ New ‘They’ — Language Change in Action
#Language #SensitivityTip #WritingTip #QuickAndDirtyTips #KirbyConrod
“The reason people struggle is that there are really two uses of singular ‘they’: an old use, which has been in use in English as far back as 1375, and a new use, which is part of a big language change in the 21st century.”

Enjoy this piece about one of my girlhood favorites -- which I have been revisiting with new eyes.

“Laura,” [Ma] chastised with a low, disappointed voice. “First, you should know that ‘Indian’ is not the preferred term…”

Here's a detailed and insightful video explainer on how to avoid #RacistTropes in fantasy writing, in particular #antisemitism. Halloween themed but relevant all year round! (And you know there's some very well-known examples of authors who have failed at this.)
From #SensitivityReader Emeric Davis on TikTok.

#CMoS and #AP both recommend using identifying terms as adjectives rather than nouns.
CMoS (Ed. 17, 5.260): “Instead of referring to someone as, for instance, ‘a Catholic,’ … put the person first by writing ‘a Catholic man’…”
This 2016 piece explains it more deeply (note: written before the capitalization of Black became common practice).

Very interesting: The #AntiDefamationLeague has adopted the spelling of #antisemitism instead of anti-Semitism.
#MerriamWebster lists this term with the hyphen first, so that's what I'd ordinarily use. But the reasoning for the no-hyphen version is compelling. Read about it at the link.
Basically, "Semitism" is not a thing. It's a dog whistle. Capitalizing it legitimizes it; lower-casing it indicates that the concept itself was never valid.
