That's a tough one: I've played hundreds of characters over the years.

I'll go with Professor Marlena Allegheri, librarian at Eversink University and sorcerer in a Swords of the Serpentine playtest campaign (2017-8). She gained magical ability after translating ancient Serpentine tablets, and a rune slithered off and into her mind. Her spheres were Dimensions, Serpents, and Secrets.

So, while I care for the Ennies just as much as I care for the Oscars (spoiler: I don't give a fuck), I was very happy to see Swords of the Serpentine get some super-deserved recognition.

@pteryx @OskarGhoti Honestly... I don't really want to play D&D-like games anymore. About the only one I still enjoy is 13th Age.

If I want to play heroic fantasy (which, honestly, is far from my favotite genre), I'd prefer playing an NSR game like Black Sword Hack or Into the Odd, a narrative-focused RPG like Dungeon World, or a skill-based level-less game like Swords of the Serpentine.

@artikid Compared to other GUMSHOE games, Swords of the Serpentine has a lower number of Investigative Abilities that are more-broadly defined.

And, yes, some abilities can seem redundant at first glance, and may overlap. This just means that very different characters with very different skill sets may be able to do similar things in certain circumstances.

@goatmajor I would have to recommend "Swords of the Serpentine." It uses the GUMSHOE system (i.e. not OSR) but it delivers _exactly_ what you describe that you're looking for.
