@MobileMaggie @RMTownsend So much of #PublicEngagement in history is just narrating history to public audiences. #Museums have done a little more with #UserGeneratedContent. #OralHistory uses #SharedAuthority to a limited extent. But I think there's still a lot of fear that the public doesn't have the background knowledge to interpret history in a way that meets all our ethical standards, and our role as historians is to be something like interpretive authorities for the public.

@RMTownsend wonderful! If I understood, you let the #StakeHolders in the study frame its goals. Sounds much more similar to #CitizenScience. #PublicHistory's closest concept is #SharedAuthority, usually limited to allowing community members to frame issues through #OralHistory narration or have input in the #interpretation of #museum exhibits. It's really helpful to see the overlap and differences in these approaches.

I'm just going to add that at almost every presentation I have done, someone sees someone they know. And I understand how bittersweet that is as my own Daddy is in there.
It can be a shock but hopefully then becomes something to treasure.
However, this and the conversations that help identify places, events and dates add so much to the #archive. It's the ultimate in #SharedAuthority and it's a privilege to be part of that.
