"Hill House neither sleeps nor dreams... Hill House watches. Hill House waits."
#Lunchtime reading: sneaky advance peek at Elizabeth Hand's A Haunting in the Hill, a return to Shirley Jackson's remarkable world, coming this autumn.

The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. —“The Lottery"
#ShirleyJackson. Today is "The Lottery" day.
The super natural goings on in #TheHauntingOfHillHouse aren't really what scares the reader in this classic haunted house novel. The truly frightening element is watching the effect the hauntings have on the relationships of the other characters and Eleanor's (the main protagonist) descent into madness. #ShirleyJackson

“The last time I glanced at the library books on the kitchen shelf they were more than five months overdue, and I wondered whether I would have chosen differently if I had known that these were the last books, the ones which would stand forever on our kitchen shelf.”

After running across some damn hilarious reactions to "that moment" in the series (if you've seen it, you'll know what I'm referring to) on Youtube, I'm itching to rewatch this.
NGL -- I didn't expect this adaptation to be so emotionally draining, especially since I didn't actually like the original story (apologies to all Shirley Jackson fans). But I appreciate the way each character's explored in their individual episode, showing how childhood trauma affected them throughout their lives until it was too late (spoiler alert!) for them to reconcile with Nell and especially their father. Also: Mr. and Mrs. Dudley own my heart.
And all that without sacrificing the gothic horror elements and all those awesome ghosts.
Anyway, I need to watch 'The Pale Blue Eye' first (for a Poe worshiper, I'm sadly slow in the uptake where adaptations are concerned).

@stevesilberman. I know everyone doesn't turn to literature to explain things, but #ShirleyJackson's "The Lottery" is resonating deeply. #bannedbooks https://www.marshall.edu/library/bannedbooks/shirley-jacksons-the-lottery/

"The Lottery" (1948)
by Shirley Jackson
One summer morning, the residents of a village gather for their annual lottery, in which all must participate.
Jackson uses images of small town festivities to lure the reader in, gradually revealing that something is amiss on the way to an unhappy ending for one resident, and providing commentary on tradition, conformity, and our capacity for violence.

Niche post about We Have Always Lived in the Castle by #shirleyjackson : I just read it and was struck by how many Disney princess movie tropes it contains, along with, you know, a little mass murder and mob violence. You've got two young sisters living in a "magical" house, doltish villagers, a blustering self-important male character, an animal sidekick, an eccentric elder, it's all there. I started picturing it animated in the style of Snow White or Beauty and the Beast. 😆

Was anyone else subjected to the short film #TheLottery based on the story by #ShirleyJackson in elementary school? I remember my class watching it once a year for several years, starting in the 4th or 5th grade, and was pretty scarred by it for life.
I found it on YouTube and wondered how it held up. I think this answers that.

It's the birthday of Shirley Jackson! In her honor, I am looking skeptically at my neighbors, encouraging friends to investigate haunted houses, and stocking up on poisons. A wonderful day!
