Interestingly, until Musk took over, I could stay balanced through a strict #ShrugAndBlock practice. The haters never got to me, and I only interacted at any length with good people. But after Musk it felt like an abusive relationship in which I was powerless to do anything but walk. So I walked.
Power to you for it. SoMe has taught me that blocking isn't usually dramatic; it's basic housekeeping. You don't want hate against minorities or other kinds of disinformation at your dinner table, you don't want it in your SoMe space. #ShrugAndBlock
Another one of the same but with another equally insidious pattern added.
Translation.
Here are awful things done by Republicans and why you should be angry with the Democrats about it.
Also a really really bad setback just happened to the Republicans so here's some doomtalk to make you feel hopeless regardless.
Yet, another fine candidate for #ShrugAndBlock
@SuneAuken
Thank You Dr Auken. If someone is acting weird with the truth, there might be all sorts of reasons for that, but never good ones. Just #ShrugAndBlock
This is your daily reminder that you have millions of friends and allies in the EU.
Also, stay mindful of who follows you. I just had a disinformation agent follow me, and it looked fairly innocuous at first. Always cut off their reach. Always block. Don't let yourself be used as a spring board for their bad intentions.
No, they can't even follow me. It's goodbye at once.
@SuneAuken
Thank You Dr Auken. Troll talk is slippery. That makes it easy to recognise. If a conversation has you questioning the obvious logic that whoever did the awful thing is to blame for the awful thing that they did, you're in slippery troll territory. Step away from that territory. Step away from that slippery troll.
This is your daily reminder that you have millions of friends and allies in the EU.
Also, follow the anger. If somebody tells you that the US Republicans is doing this awful thing, and then blames The Democrats for not doing enough to oppose it, it's troll talk.
They want you to be angry with The Democrats which is allying you with the Republicans.
Don't let yourself be dragged into it.
#DailyReminder #ShrugAndBlock #trolltalk
And here's the same troll pattern again. New topic. Same MO.
I'll translate:
Here's this awful thing done by a Republican and why you should be angry with the Democrats about it.
Ah yes. Typical troll behavior.
Let me translate the post
Here is this awful thing Russia is doing and why you should be angry with the West about it...
Learn to see the pattern. It's deeply insidious.
This is your daily reminder that you have millions of friends and allies in the EU.
Also, #ShrugAndBlock. Blocking trolls is not dramatic, it's pedestrian. A SoMe household chore. Get online, block some trolls, start your day. Trolls are so much less interesting than dirty dishes.
Oh, and on #Mastodon, it also makes sense to report haters. I must learn how to do that properly one of these days.
#ShrugAndBlock #mastodon #DailyReminder #trolls #dailychores
How do I say this? I know one of the points of mastodon is the ability to follow hashtags, and so I followed #Ukraine to be informed. But I'm almost unfollowing it because it allows a lot of hate and pro-Russian disinformation to enter my timeline, too. I #ShrugAndBlock, obviously, but it still nags me that following the hashtag brings hate to me.

@SuneAuken
Thank You Dr Auken. If all the world’s a stage, we'd better start holding auditions. Don't call us....
This is your daily reminder that you have millions of friends and allies in the EU.
Also, freedom of speech is also your right to choose who to listen to and who to ignore. Anyone claiming that you must listen to them because of free speech is playing you.
You're absolutely allowed to #ShrugAndBlock them. Being on SoMe doesn't mean you have to tolerate utterances you wouldn't accept in your home. Just cut out the hate-spewers. You're allowed.
Fin artikel om had på SoMe og hvordan man bekæmper det.

@ariadne @vlrny @ProjectFearlessness
I may or may not find out at some point. Anyway, up to now the trolls and sealions have been in so fairly moderate numbers that I can manage the #ShrugAndBlock with relatively little effort.
But then again, being a cisthet white man has always been to play the game of SoMe on "easy"-setting, so "my experience is manageable" literally only says something about MY experience.
@ariadne @vlrny @ProjectFearlessness
I always preach making semi-automated blocking a habit. I call it #ShrugAndBlock. On the bird place I used some blocklists and they helped a lot, but sometimes they gave me false postives. I don't know whether they even exist on Mastodon.
@ariadne @SuneAuken @AriadneAnarchist Sune's advice is always reliable. He's got all the tools you need. #ShrugAndBlock is the best way to deal with all trolls. Don't worry about it, don't even think twice about it, push that button and they're gone forever.
@ariadne @ProjectFearlessness @AriadneAnarchist
Ah yes. It's why one needs the #ShrugAndBlock approach. It's "see a troll - block a troll - ok what's next?"; it's much harder in real life, but it is possible to learn it as an almost automated response. If you cut off their reach you cut off their effect. They can only live on the good faith efforts of others.
My impression is that reports are much more viable on Mastodon, too, but I haven't actually explored it yet.
@SuneAuken
Thank You Dr Auken. I think of Mastodon as a highly evolved and enlightened SoMe place. When I get troll-like responses here I assume they must be well meaning and I have misunderstood. I engage with them patiently. This patience has never been rewarded. I'm learning the long and dreary way round. It doesn't matter where you are, or how many behavioural tweaks you make to a platform. Trolls gonna Troll.
#ShrugAndBlock
This is your daily reminder that you have millions of friends and allies in the EU.
Also, remember that on SoMe the haters thrive on interaction and if you cut off their interactions you cut off their reason for being on SoMe. #ShrugAndBlock wins the day. Fill your corner of the discursive space with whatever content you want more of.
