3 things about Norman Jewison’s IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT [1967]

1. Fern root on the accelerator.
2. “Oh, now, don’t get smart, black boy. I don’t need it. No pity, thank you. No thank you!”
3. Flypaper strips hanging from the ceiling at well-spaced intervals.

/#history: i love poitier - but add pigeons to sidney & my heart swells to the stratosphere. he (whose date of birth i commemorate with this silly, quick sketch) was such a phenomenal thespian...but more than that, sidney poitier was an exceptional human being. he doesn't even look vexed that the one pigeon seems to be contemplating his/her next...erm...move.

Today is Sidney Poitier’s birthday. Part of “In The Heat of the Night” was filmed in Dyersburg, TN, which is about 12 miles from me. A house that appears in that movie is located on the 51 Bypass.

If I remember correctly, it was a big deal for Sidney Poitier to agree to come South to Tennessee to film bc of the r*cial atrocities that happened in the South during that time.

Sadly, of course, bad things do still happen today throughout the South (and the country).

It would have been Sidney Poitier's 96th birthday today. Here's the tribute I wrote at Vulture after he passed away last year: vulture.com/2022/01/my-sidney-

@TeelaResists , what a great actor! He could play any character and become that person. I loved all his movies, but when he slapped-back, that racist in ‘The Heat of the Night,’ that was a special moment. 😁

discovered this while reading about the Coronet Cinema in Elephant & Castle, SE London. Apparently this movie caused a riot to break out in the 1950s among teddy boys. Real gem of a movie.

Movie tie-in paperback of To Sir With Love (1967). Back when the bad kids at school wore neatly tucked-in buttondowns, knee-length skirts, and well-fitted denim.

The Organization is the final film in the Virgil Tibbs trilogy.

It all started with the adaptation of “In the Heat of The Night” then “They Call Me Mr Tibbs!”. All of them are based on the novel series by John Ball but don’t stick too much to them after Night.

Though the sequels don’t stand out as much as the phenomenal Night, Sidney Poitier is still wonderful to watch as the Lieutenant solving murders in San Francisco way before Don Siegel’s Dirty Harry and with way more smarts and class.

What stands out in part three here are the opening and closing scenes that are executed without dialogue and purely visual.

Also the score, heck any 70s crime film score, rocks out with that funky bass that I love so much from back then. The score is even used for sound fx.
