Lady of the Night (1925), a 1925 silent film starring Norma Shearer. She plays two roles (inevitably a good girl and a bad girl). A good low-key subtle romantic drama. Worth seeing if you want to know why Norma Shearer was such a big deal.

Joe May’s 1929 German silent film Asphalt, both the last gasp of German Expressionism and the first step on the road to film noir. A young cop is seduced into a noir nightmare world by a sexy jewel thief femme fatale.

Betty Amann's performance is a highlight.

Not pure noir but noirish.

Male and Female (1919), Cecil B. DeMille's take on J.M. Barrie's The Admirable Crichton. It made teenaged Gloria Swanson a star. A shipwrecked aristocratic family needs their butler to save them.

Sophisticated comedy, a fine romantic melodrama and an effective satire. And it’s visually arresting. Great movie.

The Student of Prague was made in Germany in 1913. Inspired by both Edgar Allan Poe’s story William Wilson and the story of Faust. Despite its age it's fast-paced and dynamic and there's even location shooting.

Written/produced/directed by Paul Wegener.

A very effective horror film.

The Cheat (1915) is an early Cecil B. DeMille silent melodrama. It was the movie that put DeMille on the map. And it was one of the movies that indicated that maybe movies should be taken seriously as an art form. And it's very entertaining.

Edith Hardy needs a loan and she finds there's a high price to be paid. With the possibility of cheating.

MANSLAUGHTER is a 1922 silent melodrama directed by Cecil B. DeMille. A spoilt flapper gets herself in hot water. Typical DeMille decadence and outrageousness, with both the debauchery and the moralising melodrama being equally over-the-top.

I loved it. But Then I love all of DeMille's silent movies.

The Mark of Zorro (1920), the first of Douglas Fairbanks’ big-budget swashbucklers. Fairbanks produced and co-wrote the film.

Nobody did swashbuckling better than Fairbanks Sr. His formula for the swashbuckling adventure has never been improved upon. This movie is outrageous amounts of fun.
