I read it only once, decades ago. Turgid, dense, overwhelming & [gasp] actually quite boring. I felt very unrewarded from it. Happily, Hobbit & LoTR left much nicer recollections for me.

I'm a lover of Tolkien but it has taken me until 2022 to finally read The Silmarillion and it's incredible.

Very different to LOTR and The Hobbit but still so very magical and immersive. I would have loved to watch Tolkien bring this world to life for the first time. I blame Rings of Power completely for me reaching out and grabbing the prequel but 'je ne regrette rien' as Édith Piaf infamously sang.
