Every plug in #SilverBullet runs in its own web worker. While not providing full isolation, it’s safer than just “eval”ing random JS code in the main JavaScript thread that most systems do for plugins. All interaction between @silverbulletmd and plugs happen through message passing (syscalls and hooks). Plugs cannot interact with the UI and file system directly.

Getting so tired of all the “AI is soon coming to this and this product” announcement I’m tempted to make an announcement that #SilverBullet will never include any #AI features.

However, since this is a knowledge management app with text, there may actually be very valid use cases for it. So holding off for now.

We’re doing a bit of a focus reset here at #SilverBullet head quarters (= @zef). Rather than adding fancy new features, the focus for a while will be on going back to the roots of simplicity and robustness. Real-time collaboration was adding a lot of complexity and edge cases and therefore has been removed for now. This and some more internal work to improve robustness is all part of 0.3.5:

Well, thats been an interesting start to the day, headed to our local farm shops, on the way we saw a convoy of about 10 TVRs, then on the way back a very old but interesting silver race car type thing, looked to be early 20s or 30s maybe, then just before home a vintage Ferrari at a roundabout.

I don't know anything about this specific technology, but it's hugely frustrating to see the media frame ANYTHING as a #SilverBullet, as this article seems to.

My quiet, but perhaps naive hope is that @silverbullet’s core functionality at some point will be done. All the fundamentals are there and solid (we can bug fix and optimize still but not add new fundamentals), and #Plugs are how the project keeps evolving. I think this is achievable. Take the #Vim and #Emacs ecosystems as an example. Have they added significantly to their core over the last 20 years? My sense is all innovation happened in “user space.” This is what I want for #SilverBullet too.

From a purely technical perspective, one of the more interesting aspects of #SilverBullet is its extension mechanism. The vast majority of functionality in #SilverBullet is implemented using “plugs” that run some of its functionality (written in #TypeScript) on the front-end (in sandboxed web workers), and some on the back-end (in sandboxed workers in Deno).

While I originally proclaimed I was fine adding #Vim mode to #SilverBullet I would not use them myself, I have to admit I’ve been using it fulltime ever since I integrated it and it’s pretty nice. It’s funny how easily you fall back to those keybindings. They’re still imprinted in my fingers apparently. Now have to have vim mode everywhere, though…
