So weird to be at an reading at the and not recognize anyone!

(Probably I do know at least a few people but they’re either masked or my face-myopia is getting the better of me!)

Excited to see read from her new book!

Almut hat von rezensiert:

"I wanted to write a gothic story because it's not generally associated with Latin American writers. There is an almost cliché association with magic realism but we are capable of writing more than that. . . ."

Since we've all been talking about how to find and develop interesting characters, I feel like sharing an old craft post about a fun way to think about describing them.

It's about Silvia Moreno-Garcia's (amazing!) CERTAIN DARK THINGS and physical description that is really alive and thrilling.

Mexican Gothic (2020) by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Few manage to still capture the essence of what makes gothic horror fun. Here, the genre's subversive core is laid bare. A decaying house, a creepy family obsessed with genetics and an outsider who tries to save someone from their clutches, all those classic elements have a lot to say about race, class and even colonialism, making this familiar story feel brand new.

Finished. Ending was satisfying, if a bit rushed. A solid start to spooky reading season. Next: by

Today, in our golden age of literature, when almost everything has been done to death, one of the best and most rare gifts a book can give the reader is surprise. Thank you, Mexican Gothic.

In the early chapters, I felt a lot of parallels with a certain classic, so when Noemí arrived at The High Place, I thought "OK, the gimmick is obviously X, yawn, I hope she at least does something novel with it." Then, a bit further on, "Hmm, it would be kind of cool if it turned out to be something to do with Y…" Then it did, and in a more intriguing way than I had considered.

If a slow, tense buildup to a wild climax is something you're interested in, go check out Mexican Gothic.

She thought that men such as her father could be stern and men could be cold like Virgil, but women needed to be liked or they’d be in trouble. A woman who is not liked is a bitch, and a bitch can hardly do anything: all avenues are closed to her.
