One of my goals here is to use something like #slidge as gateways to legacy networks too, so I can have a single client that ends up working as a multi-protocol one.

So if you run a community of users or have friends and they all are on different apps, you can bridge all those different chats into one chatroom. And it works.

#OpenMW (<3) does this and they bridge their XMPP, Matrix, Discord and some other chatrooms into one big chatroom. And it works.

As an alternative #slidge can do essentially the same, but also has Signal support, so this pleases me. However, this is chatrooms chatting with chatrooms still as far as I can tell. But I should test this.

Software written with #slixmpp are console #Jabber client #poezio, #SMS-XMPP gateway #sms4you, #prometheus web hook prometheus-xmpp-alerts, #chatbot #errbot, package update notifier #painintheapt, and general purpose #XMPP #gateway framework #slidge.

(All but the latter are available in #Debian, btw.)

Any XMPP users tired of buggy transports or PinePhone users keeping an eye on RAM usage, I recommend keeping an eye on Slidge. I have an instance going and I was able to drop Signal Desktop from my PinePhone entirely. It's not perfect yet, but it's already very usable

On PinePhone, Dino (built with libhandy) is pretty feature rich, but lacks notification sounds or integration with feedbackd. To make up for that, I have Chatty running alongside it

Woo! I finally have Signal groupchats working on my Slidge instance! I can finally kill that bloated electron desktop client on my Pinephone! Seriously, Signal Desktop eats ~300MB of RAM on a fresh boot, which isn't great on a phone with only 3GB of RAM. Now if only Dino supported audible notifications then I'd be set 🤔

No, from their perspective, #Jabber #XMPP would be a downgrade. And I even agree with them on that.

However, I strongly disagree with their values, i.e. give more weight to encryption and meta data reduction than #digitalSovereignty and freedom of users.
