Slime molds spend much of their lives as amoeba-like single-cell organisms but can also join up to form colonies. They often appear as slimy blobs of various color (hence the name) but some also grow bizarrely shaped fruiting bodies. During the week after the much needed rain, I found a surprising variety growing on decaying hardwood deep in the forest.
Despite slime molds not being true fungi, I'm posting this for #FungiFriday. #SlimeMolds #Fungi

“My eyes were starting to learn slime mold. My ways of seeing were altering, thanks to my new friends who were showing me what to look for. What was once invisible was quickly becoming apparent.”

This week on our podcast, we bring you a story from down deep among the forest floor. Journalist and author Lucy Jones brims with awe upon discovering slime molds and explores what might happen if, rather than trying to decipher such creatures, we instead bask in the wonder of their obscurity. Found this #slimemold growing on a fallen tree in the middle of the forest. I see these fairly often but yesterday the last sun rays before sunset started illuminating them right when I was taking pictures and it looked a bit like lava flowing down so I thought worth sharing!

In this essay, Lucy Jones discovers the magic of slime molds. Lying at the edge of our understanding, these beings invite us into their mystery and remind us of the vast possibilities of life on Earth. ' “Mum! Mum! I think I’ve found a slime mold!”
“No. NO??!!!” I shouted, sticking my feet halfway into my trainers and rushing out to my six-year-old daughter in our garden....
She pointed out a mass of tiny maroon tubes, clumped together on old damp pallets. The wood was loose, so I picked it up and fetched my hand lens. It was a mother-fucking slime mold. In my garden. In my garden! Holy shit. The hunt was really on. '

Neither plants, animals, nor fungi, the slippery, undefinable beings known as slime molds have in recent years captured the public imagination and demonstrated an intelligence that lies at the limits of our own understanding. I came across this lovely decomposing log last week on Ile-St-Bernard (Chateauguay, Quebec near Montreal Island).
I think I'm looking at moss and orange slime mold? Or would the orange be some other type of orange fungus?
