'Smart' motorways aren't. Close to J16 on the M1 this afternoon, a truck was stopped with hazards flashing. in front of him a woman was getting out of a stationary car. No warnings and very scary. These smart lanes need to go back to being hard shoulders.

Smart motorways are "smart" because they enforce speed limits to get a better flow of traffic at busy periods.
They are not safe if they remove, as you say, a safer place to stop immediately because of car problems!

I note that #SmartMotorways are to be scrapped. I first used one around #Birmingham in 2006/2007. A real help at rush hour. The only real issue was drivers ignoring a RED 'X' !! Even the left hand lane, when approaching a junction, was used as an undertaking lane to frog hop any slow traffic. Yes the lack of safety areas is concerning but can be fixed. Drivers attitudes not so 'fixable'.

Well overdue.
A mad idea in the first place.
Nobody knows how to use them properly, they don't appear to have any effect on congestion. And they feel dangerous.

There now needs to be a vigorous campaign to restore the hard shoulders.
They are still there. It's just lines and signage.
