MusicPod is a New Music, Podcast, and Radio Player for Ubuntu
A new all-in-one music, radio and podcast player is in development for Ubuntu, called MusicPod. Though MusicPod not an “official” Ubuntu app it is being developed under the umbrella of the Ubuntu Flutter Community, who also maintain that Fluter-based software app we previewed last summer which Ubuntu may use in a future release. The app is built in Flutter and uses Flutter’s “Yaru” design elements to effect a look that’s similar to the GTK theme of the same name but, y’know, without being an actual GTK app. So what can it do? MusicPod Fluter App MusicPod can play local audio :sys_more_orange:

‘Significant Improvements’ Made to Ubuntu Firefox Snap
Canonical has often talked about how it has improved the startup time of Snap apps yet, for many of us, the improvements remained theoretical.

BlueMail Mail Client Gets a Makeover, Support for Wayland
The cross-platform BlueMail email client from Blix recently got a redesign and I have to say it’s quite the improvement. So if you (as I) haven’t checked in with the free (but not open source) e-mail client since it launched on Linux back in 2019 now is a pretty good time to do so. For those not already familiar with it, BlueMail is a cross-platform free email app compatible with multiple mail accounts, including those from web-mail providers like Google, Yahoo, FastMail, et al plus IMAP, SMTP, Exchange ActiveSync, EWS and POP3. As the BlueMail app connects directly to a :sys_more_orange:

EverSticky: Sticky Notes App for Linux that Syncs to Evernote
When it comes to sticky note apps for Linux it’s fair to say we’re spoilt for choice – heck knows I’ve tried most of the ones out there! EverSticky is another open-source sticky notes app for Linux but it has a major difference: it syncs to Evernote, the hugely-popular note taking and task management service. Existing Evernote users will find this a compelling USP as, with minimal effort, it’s easy to take notes and keep them in sync across multiple devices. EverSticky is a Qt-based app created by developer Joey Miller. But it’s fully compatible with most modern Linux desktops :sys_more_orange:

Canonical Details Plans to Make the Firefox Snap, Snappier
I think most of us can agree that the Firefox Snap included in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS doesn’t start up nearly as fast as it could (or arguably should). Now, Canonical wants us to know that — and it wants us know that it’s doing something to fix it. Canonical’s Oliver Smith runs through the current causes of slow cold startup times in a blog post, and details some of the steps its engineers are taking to improve the situation. Oliver also spends a bit of time setting out the stall for why Firefox is now a Snap app in Ubuntu, :sys_more_orange:

Plex’s New Linux App is Available as a Snap
Plex fans may be interested to hear an official Plex desktop app for Linux is now available to install from the Snap Store. Plex shared the news of its desktop app update in a blog post today, writing “…as of today Plex HTPC goes live as the true spiritual successor to [Plex Media Player] TV mode,” the media streaming service’s much-loved but aged desktop app. The Plex Desktop app is already available on macOS and Windows, so this is the first time it has been widely available on Linux desktops. The Plex team says it is ‘actively working on Flatpak builds :sys_more_orange:

How to Install Firefox as a .deb on Ubuntu 22.04 (Sorry, Snap!)
In this guide I detail how to install Mozilla Firefox as a .deb package on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and not as a Snap app. Ubuntu’s latest version includes Firefox as a Snap app by default. This Snap package is the only version of Firefox available ‘out of the box’. If you run apt install firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 it doesn’t install a .deb version but a transition package that will install the Firefox Snap. Which isn’t ideal if you don’t want to use the Firefox Snap package. Don’t get me wrong Snap apps have their pluses, but also a few :sys_more_orange:

Use Snaps? You’ll Dig This Nifty GNOME Extension
Snap app fans will want to check out an extension for GNOME Shell that makes it easier to manage, update, and configure software installed using the packaging format. It’s called Snap Manager and while it’s not an official Snapcraft/Canonical add-on (it’s made by a third-party) it does boast a neat front-end for many of the snapd engine’s command-line actions. For example, instead of open a terminal and running snap list or snap refresh you can just click the options in the Snap Manager menu. “A simple popup menu in the top bar to easily manage usual snap tasks. ‘UpNote’ Note-Taking App is Now Available on Linux
If you’re yet to settle on a note-taking service that works across platforms you may want to check out a new option now available for Linux: UpNote. Now, I will mention upfront that the UpNote Linux client is Electron-based, and it is closed-source, proprietary software. The service does offer a free tier that lets you create “up to” 50 notes using basic features but you will need to shell out $0.99/month subscription (or pay a $19.99 one off fee) to create more than this, and unlock advanced options like tables, attachments, and extra export options. The image editing app Pinta has a new bug-fix release out. Pinta 1.7.1 is intended as the final update in the GTK2-based series, with a GTK3 build (dubbed Pinta 1.8) said to be nearly ready for release. Ubuntu Wants to Make Firefox Snap the Default in 21.10
Ubuntu is making the Firefox Snap package the default for new installations of Ubuntu 21.10, as well as those upgrading from Ubuntu 21.04. A feature freeze exception request opened to get the Firefox deb package in the Ubuntu ‘seed’ replaced with the Snap version states: “Per Canonical’s distribution agreement with Mozilla, we’re making the snap the default installation of firefox on desktop ISOs starting with Ubuntu 21.10”. Firefox is currently distributed via the Ubuntu repo as a deb package. But users who install Ubuntu 21.10 will, once the feature freeze request is granted, find the official Snap version of Firefox :sys_more_orange:
