That ‘Unofficial’ Snap Store Could Become More Official

If you read my post about the ‘unofficial’ Snap Store for Ubuntu (and why I think it’s better than the actual Snap Store for Ubuntu) I’ve got an interesting update. Switching to the preview/edge channel for the official Ubuntu Snap Store — Snap Store is the GNOME Software fork Ubuntu ships with, with the Flatpak goodness stripped out and Snap stuff bolted on — now installs the unofficial without-a-name Flutter-based store. It seems the unofficial Snap Store is set to become the official Snap Store! Is that surprising? As noted on Reddit, the community-based, Flutter-built, PackageKit-leveraging Snap Store looks, feels, :sys_more_orange:

This Unofficial ‘Ubuntu Software’ App is Better Than Ubuntu’s Actual One

There’s an interesting and totally unofficial new desktop software store in development by the Ubuntu Flutter Community (though the app is designed to work on other distros also). It doesn’t have a name yet, nor any branding, and as it’s still in active development there are only alpha-quality snapshots to play with. Devs describe it as ‘an alternative software store for the Ubuntu Desktop made with Flutter‘, the app-development tech Ubuntu is all-in on. It’s not developed by Canonical (though Canonical employees do contribute to the code) and there’s no suggestion it’ll ever ship by default on the OS itself. :sys_more_orange:

Steam is Now on the Snap Store — And You Can Help Test It

A Steam Snap app is now available for testing. Following an announcement at LAS Canonical says it’s “going all in” to improve the Linux gaming on Ubuntu. As part of that effort they want to simplify and smooth out the bumps currently involved in getting a gaming setup set up on Ubuntu. Canonical says it’s ‘going all in’ to improve gaming on Ubuntu And top of their list is bringing Steam to the Snap Store. The new Steam Snap app is packaged by Canonical and not Valve (no word on whether Valve is interested in officially supporting it if it’s :sys_more_orange:

Guten Morgen zusammen!

Ubuntu 22.04’s Snap-Only Software Store is a Bug, Not a Feature

I’ve seen a few folks mention that Ubuntu 22.04 no longer lets search for, browse, or install .deb packages from the Ubuntu repo using the Ubuntu Software app. Technically they’re not wrong as, at the time I write this, it doesn’t let you do that. But don’t panic: this is a bug. While some may want a Snap-only experience in Ubuntu, it’s a bit too early to roll with one — not to mention a controversial decision not suited to an LTS release! Developers have spent the past five months working hard to fill the Jammy archive with updated apps, :sys_more_orange:

Souk is the Flatpak App Store We’ve Been Waiting For

A brand new store front for Flatpak apps is in development and first impressions are positive — it looks exactly like the kind of app many folks have been clamouring for. It’s called Souk (a :sys_more_orange:

Does the Snap Store Use Too Much Memory?

The Snap Store app Ubuntu 20.10 uses a lot of memory even when it's not running. In this post I opine on the problem and ask if others experience it too.
