Snapcraft Website Given a ‘More Modern Look’

Next time you stop by the Snapcraft website you’ll notice it has a fresh new look. Canonical unveiled the changes today saying it “embarked on a project to redesign snapcraft.io and give it a more modern look”. This ‘more modern look’ is now live on the web for everybody, including you, to go gawk at. If you follow @omgubuntu on Twitter you’ll may have seen a tweet earlier the week in which I expressed slight surprise™ at the new logo. What previously said “Snapcraft” now says “Canonical Snapcraft” – which in light of those “proprietary backend” claims levelled against the format perhaps :sys_more_orange:

Canonical Announces Big Changes for ‘Future of Snapcraft’

Unexpectedly, Canonical has shared a new blog post covering ‘the future of Snapcraft’ — but don’t get carried away: they’re not moving away from Snap apps. In fact, they’re kinda doubling down. Canonical’s Igor Ljubuncic explains more in a relatively wordy-yet-vague blog post. He says that the current codebase for Snapcraft (the technology behind Snaps) will become “legacy” and a newer, smaller, and ‘even more modular’ Snapcraft codebase (dubbed ‘core22’) will take over. Yes, Canonical is rewiring Snapcraft. One hopes this address some of its present shortcomings and, again, one hopes the changes may broaden its appeal within the wider :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu Wants to Make Firefox Snap the Default in 21.10

Ubuntu is making the Firefox Snap package the default for new installations of Ubuntu 21.10, as well as those upgrading from Ubuntu 21.04. A feature freeze exception request opened to get the Firefox deb package in the Ubuntu ‘seed’ replaced with the Snap version states: “Per Canonical’s distribution agreement with Mozilla, we’re making the snap the default installation of firefox on desktop ISOs starting with Ubuntu 21.10”. Firefox is currently distributed via the Ubuntu repo as a deb package. But users who install Ubuntu 21.10 will, once the feature freeze request is granted, find the official Snap version of Firefox :sys_more_orange:
