Ubuntu 23.10 Won’t Use a Snap’d Printing Stack After all
Ubuntu was planning to ship the CUPS printing stack as a Snap in 23.10 — but after several months of testing its changed its mind. Accordingly, a DEB-based printing stack will feature in Ubuntu 23.10 “Mantic Minotaur” and in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Switching to the CUPS Snap will now happen in the Ubuntu 24.10 release (but work on it will continue in the Ubuntu Core Desktop builds). So what gives? This reversal is undoubtedly disappointing for the devs working on it but it is the right decision for end-users — for the time being. The CUPS Snap doesn’t support all :sys_more_orange:

I'm running #Ubuntu on my server but I'd like to move away from it. Was thinking of #Fedora server but I'd like something that isn't all new and just works, maybe I'm doing it a disservice. I was thinking that might be #CentOS but I've now caught up on that big palaver.
I used to love #Arch when I was younger but I have kids now and can't devote the energy to it, I just want a stable OS to run #Docker containers on that's easy to install and doesn't shove #UbuntuPro or #Snaps down my throat.

Ubuntu Plans to Ditch its ‘Minimal’ Install Option Because, Er… We’re Not Sure
The introduction of a “minimal install” mode in the Ubuntu installer has been one of the distros best-received features in years. When selected during initial install Ubuntu’s ‘minimal install’ provides users with a complete, fully-functioning Ubuntu system but, notably, with fewer pre-installed apps. The same ISO also delivers a ‘full installation’ mode stacked with a diverse set of software – the default, recommended option. So naturally, having added a feature a ton of people enjoy, Ubuntu is, er, removing it. They plan a new “unified default install” that, from the sounds of things, will offer a “choose your own apps” :sys_more_orange:

Snapcraft Website Given a ‘More Modern Look’
Next time you stop by the Snapcraft website you’ll notice it has a fresh new look. Canonical unveiled the changes today saying it “embarked on a project to redesign snapcraft.io and give it a more modern look”. This ‘more modern look’ is now live on the web for everybody, including you, to go gawk at. If you follow @omgubuntu on Twitter you’ll may have seen a tweet earlier the week in which I expressed slight surprise™ at the new logo. What previously said “Snapcraft” now says “Canonical Snapcraft” – which in light of those “proprietary backend” claims levelled against the format perhaps :sys_more_orange:

Immutable, All-Snap Ubuntu Desktop Coming Next Year
An all-snap Ubuntu desktop is coming — and sooner than you might think! According to Canonical’s Oliver Grawert, the next long-term support release of Ubuntu will be available to download in two versions: a classic, deb-based version and, for the first time, as an immutable, snap-based build too. You can’t see me but I can assure you that I’m pulling my best faux-shocked face right now. Why the snark? Well, let’s face it: an all-snap Ubuntu desktop is inevitable. If I’m surprised by anything it’s not that it’s happening next April, but that it has taken this long to happen :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu Wants to Switch CUPS Printing Stack to Snap
Ubuntu 23.10 is aiming to ship the CUPS printing stack as a snap package. Canonical’s Till Kamppeter, who is also the project lead for the OpenPrinting Project, says he wants to “…switch Ubuntu 23.10, the Mantic Minotaur, as planned, to use the CUPS Snap as its printing system and the Printer Application Snaps as drivers for non-IPP-driverless printers.” Printers are not my forte; I last owned a printer about a decade ago and even then it hadn’t been used for years — not quite a daisy wheel, but getting there 😉! I recall lots of printer driver issues on Ubuntu, :sys_more_orange:

Bored of Slow Ubuntu Shutdowns (Thanks Snap) I Went In Search of a Solution…
Sometimes when I shutdown Ubuntu …it takes ages to actually power off. Am I alone? Am I unreasonable? I hit shutdown (or run sudo shutdown now in a terminal) and expect Ubuntu to do the whole “going… to gone” process in around 5-10 seconds, max. I want to be able to close my laptop’s lid, stuff it in my bag, and go buy bread because I’m half pigeon. And, to be fair, most of the time Ubuntu does do that. But sometimes …It doesn’t. Sometimes it hangs. For ages. The loading dots on the shutdown screen just keep… dotting. Like :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu Wants You to Test its Steam Snap
Remember when Ubuntu said it was getting serious about gaming? Well, it hasn’t forgotten entirely — it’s once again asking gamers to take part in a fresh bout of testing for its Steam snap. Steam is available on Ubuntu through traditional packaging methods but Canonical sees its Steam snap as the real future of the games platform on Ubuntu. That kinda of makes sense: it’s a tad easier to cater for the tangle of 32-bit libraries older games require using a sandboxed, separated Snap file system. “Since publishing steam as a snap under the “Early Access” banner, we’ve been working :sys_more_orange:

1st beach day for one of our dogs.
Super long thin rope to his puppy harness that let him roam 100 feet. He'd run off & explore. Then run back to say everything is brilliant & exciting here at this new beach thing!

Ubuntu Devs Finally Fix Frustrating Firefox Snap Flaw
Ubuntu’s beleaguered Firefox Snap package is tackling another of longstanding criticism of it, namely its lack of native messaging support. It’s this fancy-sounding feature that allows Firefox add-ons to “exchange messages with a native application, installed on the user’s computer”. This enables things like desktop password managers to function as expected in the browser. But at last there’s change ahoy. In a short update on the Snapcraft forum Ubuntu developer Olivier Tilloy says integration of a new WebExtensions XDG portal with the latest beta builds of Mozilla Firefox is ready for wider testing via the Snap store. The patches mean :sys_more_orange:
