Random thoughts on #SocialMobility ...

We were right on the edge of working poor growing up. This was a comfort zone for Dad. His family came from entrenched rural poverty.

Mum's background was more complicated... her family was downwardly mobile, through bad luck. Her mother was a teacher though, she had some education herself, and so she pushed us kids to go further. She influenced our education.

And education was the ticket up the ladder. It's a weird balance being middle class... 1/2

I find social mobility, as it seems to exist in the imagination of establishment politicians and think-tank wonks, to be such an unappealing concept. I have very little desire to advance in front of others as part of some constant zero-sum game, to become even more debt-saddled, overworked, and generally unfree; and for what? A few extra toys and gadgets? Some ephemeral sense of status? Why can’t I just live a happy, comfortable, dignified life where I am? #capitalism #class #Socialmobility
