@lentsius I guess #SolarAsh is likely a lot more indicative of how #HyperLightBreaker may turn out, but I've been to stingy to buy it so far... 😅 Especially since it seems to be rather short. But I'm curious for sure!

Before I pivoted to implementing opaque SDF clouds for #SolarAsh, we were considering using density clouds instead. The problem with those is that it gets harder to read the density gradient as you get closer to them, so I was playing around with having a solid isosurface that would appear around you.

This worked, but we ultimately decided that opaque clouds were more in line with the visual style of the rest of the game (and easier to optimize too).

At an abstract level, the #SolarAsh shading model is fairly similar to other toon models, but there were some specific qualities we were trying to hit:

1. Gradients and lots of them
2. Hard light cuts

If these two seem at odds, you're not alone in thinking that. It took a healthy amount of back and forth with art to home in on the feature set that would let us hit those goals. 1/?

Since we're just a month out from the Steam release of #SolarAsh (Dec 6th, go wishlist it) now seems like as good a time as any to talk about my involvement with it.

I started working on it in 2018 doing shading model exploration. Over the next three years I worked on the clouds you skate around on, various graphics/tech art things, and a whole lot of optimization (it took a lot to ship on PS4).

It's my plan to post a bunch more about that work over the next month.

Этот поворот с «EVANGELION» оказался для меня весьма неожиданным. Хотя если сейчас посмотреть в целом на стиль, да и одного персонажа очень уже напоминающего референс на Лилит, то всё встаёт на свои места.

А так, игру, что до обзора, что после него, описал бы как более дикую версию «The Pathless». И звучит это афигенно. Хочется как-нибудь прикоснуться к «Solar Ash». Не вижу острой потребности, но когда-нибудь было бы неплохо.

А ну и «Death’s Door» – одна из лучших игр года.
