After obtaining permission to exhume him, they turned back towards Ramsey. They had gotten no further than Heston Island, when a storm blew up and claimed the small ship entirely, with no survivors.

The Bridegroom’s body was first buried near the shore where shipwrecked sailors had been previously buried, then moved on the Sheriff’s order to Colvend Kirkyard. The Brother-in-law made it back to the Isle of Man where the Bride-to-be and the family were
devastated by the news.

Pretending not to understand English, the Manxmen continued toward their landing spot at Port o’ Warren. They had hardly gone any distance though, when the cutter fired and killed the Bridegroom. The Bride’s brother panicked, put in at Colvend and took flight. Their boat was towed back to the customs house at Kirkcudbright.

A young man from Ramsey, in the north of the Island, once took it upon himself to smuggle some bags of salt to help pay for his impending marriage.
On the eve of the wedding, in defiance of the advice of relatives, he sailed with his soon to be Brother-in-law to Colvend. As they travelled up the Solway, a cutter named Prince Edward Augustus ordered them to ‘lay-to’ with a megaphone.
