A day of two halves (but not halves). Spent the day in front of MS Teams doing my Independent Person training as newly appointed into the role for #Somerset #Council. Then leapt out the door for a beautiful run in the sun. #RunningIsFunning

Today in the lane. Just to dispel any romantic notions, the predominant aromas here were wild garlic and sheep shit (large field full of sheep on the left). Further on, there was some glorious birdsong however, which was beautiful.

Such a beautiful sky this evening, which my phone camera can't begin to do justice to. A barn owl was screeching and a few bats fluttering around - perfect.

The Moon and Venus looking lovely tonight. Even on such a thin sliver of a new Moon, the rest of her face is lit by earthshine.

I thinks itβs stunning. You canβt picture several million deaths;he serves for them all
RT @StroudStory: Here's the #WWI #warmemorial to Edward Horner, d. 1917, by Edwin Lutyens, sculpture by Alfred Munnings, in Mells, #Somerset. It's a very fine thing, but, I feel, too much in this little parish church. What about the rest of the dead? Also, weirdly not life-size! #MonumentsMonday https://t.co/CxqIujWDxD

We visited Waterrow Viaduct today, where the railway from Taunton to Barnstaple, originally the Devon & Somerset Railway and later part of the GWR, crossed the River Tone. Opened in 1873, the line was broad gauge when built. The viaduct was 162 yards long and 101 feet high. The line closed in 1966, but the decking wasn't removed until 1971.
Of all the lines I never got to travel on, this is the one I'd most wish to ride, through beautiful countryside to the sea.
Through the upstairs window this afternoon...

Church Lane, Dulverton, a row of early to mid 19th century houses. The lane in front is cobbled and green with plants growing through the cobblestones.

Today in the lane: a damselfly. Pleased it remained still enough for a short while to be photographed.

In the churchyard of St Mary's church, East Brent, is this stone figure, seeming to rise out of the grass. English Heritage describe it as: 'Recumbent figure of a merchant. Probably early C16. Dressed stone. Life-size effigy clad in a robe, the head resting on a woolpack, face mutilated.' Why is he out here, and not buried inside the church with all the other rich folk? Or has his effigy been moved outside for reasons unknown?
