At the entrance into the valley leading to Sossusvlei are the Elim Dunes. Easy to reach, but many people bypass them and had directly to the famous sites.

Not very deep (around 30m), but in some areas very narrow!

Dunes with low sun give some really nice patterns and shapes. Curves, zigzags, lines,... all kind of geometrical shapes.

We are leaving Deadvlei and have another look at the huge sand dunes along the valley leading in to Sossusvlei. While pretty plain during full daylight, the shapes come to life with the low sun at sunrise and sunset.

A last look at Deadvlei before we move on (but not too far). Not all of Deadvlei has those trees. The back area is pretty barren. But this gives a nice contrast with some of the highest dunes in the world.

Here are my personal favorite photos from Deadvlei. One with the direction of the sun and interesting lines from the trees and branches. The other one is against the sun with shadows and a sunstar.

The fun thing: There is one person visible in each photo (small in the back). See, if you can find them. They give a nice scale to that breathtaking landscape.

Deadvlei is one of the most famous sites in Namibia. It's a white clay pan which got completely cut off from the river about 900 years ago. All larger trees died, but due to extreme dry conditions, the wood can not rot. So they are still standing and scorched black by intense sun

Here are impressions around sunrise even before the sun reaches the claybed itself, giving nice dark silhouettes of the trees
