Today in 1989, a massive solar flare hit the Earth. This flare overwhelmed the electrical grid of Quebec, knocking out power to the entire province for nine hours.
The combination of outdated electric grids & the Canadian Shield, made it a perfect storm.

Today in 1989, a massive M7.3 solar flare erupts off the sun. It is over 36 Earths in size, and travels at 1.6 km/h towards the Earth.
The next day, it will hit the planet and knock out power to the entire province of Quebec for nine hours.

Happy birthday to Marc Garneau!

Born today in 1949, Marc Garneau was the first Canadian to fly in space. He flew on the Challenger from Oct. 5-13, 1984. He returned to space in 1996 & 2000.
Since 2008, he has been a Member of Parliament.

Today in 1978, Kosmos 954, a Soviet nuclear-powered satellite, re-enters the Earth's atmosphere over Canada. It leaves a trail of debris, some of it radioactive, 600km long across the Northwest Territories.
Work begins immediately to clean up the debris.

Today in 1924, Yvonne Brill is born in Winnipeg. She will become a rocket engineer and invented the electrothermal hydrazine thruster. This thruster allows satellites to stay in orbit. She later contributed to the development of the rocket engines on the Space Shuttles.

Today in 1954, Steve MacLean was born. He flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia, staying in space from Oct. 22 - Nov. 1, 1992. He returned to space on the Space Shuttle Atlantis, from Sept. 9 - 21, 2006.
He was the 1st Canadian to operate the Canadarm2 & the 2nd to do a spacewalk.
