@atomicpoet @reiver @fediversenews Will #SpaceHost provide service coast to coast?
So when I moved atomicpoet.org from Digital Ocean to #SpaceHost, I actually downgraded my hardware from 2xCPU and 2 GB RAM to 1xCPU and 1 GB RAM.
And the performance has actually improved!
There's a few reasons for this. For one, I haven't upgraded Pleroma until now—I was waiting on migration.
The second thing is, now I have a team to make things running incredibly smoothly.
Now here's the further consideration. Both @reiver and I know that for the Fediverse to survive, devs and community server admins need a way to procure funding.
So part of building #SpaceHost will be options for crowd-funding. Making it super easy for everyone to pay their bills.
Will Twitter Blue or Meta Verified do that? Nope!
I'm starting up a fully-managed Fediverse hosting service with @reiver called #SpaceHost.
I'm very aware of who our competitors are: Twitter Blue and Meta Verified.
If you compare Twitter Blue with Meta Verified, #SpaceHost blows both services out of the water in terms of sheer functionality.
And why is this? Because the Fediverse is free and open source.
#SpaceHost is still early in development. But we may be interested in allowing a few testers who are okay with helping us finetune the service.
Obviously, there may be some nice perks for potential testers.
Next on #SpaceHost, you'll be able to select what powers your community.
As you can see, we intend on supporting:
1. Pleroma
2. Friendica
3. Pixelfed
4. PeerTube
5. Gitea
6. Lemmy
Not seen in screenshot, we're supporting Mastodon.
But more services will be supported too.
On #SpaceHost, after you select what your social network will be focused on, you can next select what your capacity will be.
Note: this capacity is based on estimates. This is why we say "up to" a certain number -- your mileage may vary.
Nevertheless, we think it's extremely important to offer an option for single-user servers.
Here's a preview of #SpaceHost, a fully-managed Fediverse hosting service that @reiver and I are building.
As you can see, you'll be able to select your Fediverse server based on:
* Micro Blogging
* Macro Blogging
* Forums
* Image Posting
* Video Posting
* Media Posting
* Social Coding
@Deus I'm actually talking to @reiver about integrating some sort of financing system inside #SpaceHost. With what's going on with these instance shutdowns, this is becoming a more critical conversation.
@ProgGrrl @zleap Well, @reiver and I have started #SpaceHost
Not meaning to plug, but your hope is something we're actually working on!
And then... for hosting... could wait for #SpaceHost pricing? But Mastohost is something like $6 a month plus tax for a single-user instance. Assuming you pay £30-ish a year for a domain, could get your own instance for under £10 a month

Want to support the wider Fediverse community? There's a few hosting options.
Digital Ocean offers 1-click install for Mastodon -- though this is self-service.
If you're looking for fully-managed hosting that's Mastodon-specific, there's @mastohost.
I, along with @reiver, are soon going too launch #SpaceHost -- fully managed hosting for the Fediverse. We will be supporting Mastodon, Pixelfed, Pleroma, among others!

Those 3 favorites then turned into this.
The final design for our pixel alien.
But not the final color, or how it would be presented.
So we had something very close to the final #SpaceHost logo. But there was still a bit more work to do.
17/
We went through this iterative process with Chet a number of times — until we got down to these 3 favorites —
As potential #SpaceHost logos.
These 3 —
16/
Chet started creating a lot of different designs similar to the favorite rough sketches.
He showed us a lot! (More than I can attach to this post.)
He wanted to get a sense of what we did and didn't like.
(I also showed these to others outside our group. To try to get a more representative sentiment.)
15/
Chet also explored a lot of other ideas. A lot!
But here is the thing we eventually noticed —
We got mixed results with most of the ideas — some people liked them, some people didn't.
Except for 2 ideas. With 2 of the ideas, most the people we showed them to seem to like them.
You can probably already guess which 2 those were.
So Chet started focusing on these more. Let's look at what came next —

Chet even explored some stuff that sort of looked like an astronaut — sort of.
